Chainlink is an open source software for providing data to block chains.
In the automated contracts that Microsoft will have with game developers data is necessary to trigger these contracts
Microsoft and game devs can come to a golden source of truth on that data that triggers said contracts

The token is used to pay nodes which fetch data.
The data has to be delivered to contracts reliably at specific times.
This costs money
It’s also collateral. So a node can say hey, I’m so reliable that I’m willing to put money up front, so that if I don’t deliver my data correctly I will lose money.

No staking after 3 years, they've dropped all mention of when it will be implemented, and most of the 30 or so nodes are just piggybacking public APIs and only collect link to market dump them. There is no slashing.

staking hasn't been needed cuz the token distribution can bankroll the rollout of the network for some time.
