Stone and mortar is the best material to build a house out of, literally lasts centuries. I’ve been working in concrete since I was 15, and building a concrete house is my ultimate goal if link really moons.

eh, they actually build lots of warehouses and industrial buildings like that here in Canada, and you absolutely would not be able to break them with a sledgehammer. They might crack if you drove a car into them, but even then that's debateable and you would probably need heavy machinery like an excavator to actually break one.
I dont do concrete, but I've worked on shitloads of buildings built exactly like he described, and they're really sturdy and well insulated (there's usually some sort of composite insulating core in the panels).

I think they're kind of ugly unfinished, but with some flashing/siding/faux stone veneer/etc it could look nice.

Breaking a thin layer of concrete is incredibly tiresome. If you add a steel armature it's almost unbreakable because the wall will not collapse no matter how big a hole you do.

The only way a concrete house like OP's could be economical is if the house was precast off site in a plant that mass produces them at scale. If that house was formed, poured and finished on site the labor and expense that went into building the forms alone you might as well build the house from wood or brick instead.

Pretty sure the Chinese do precast concrete office buildings that go up in a few days. I doubt OP would want to live in one of those.

Coming from ex USSR country, where cheap public housing was built from pre-fab concrete slabs with prestressed concrete. Concrete is the cheapest to build with, if you have large enough gig going on, building a single house - sure it might be even double on what a stick frame would cost, but if you are mid-large contractor, having all your building build like that - its going to be cheaper.
I think its a cultural thing, rather than economic. And it's good. The concrete housing sucks, and after 50-60 years you have to put them down, they are mostly rusted, leaks every where, cant be fixed without expensive specialist crews coming in and using heavy machinery etc.
The stick frame can be fixed with some basic DIY experience and almost no heavy tools or cranes. Also the insulation of the concrete is just awful. The only good thing is, if its 6-8" thick it has better sound proofing, and won't kill you by collapsing on you in a fire, but you still have to repair/change it after a fire, the thing cracks.
Also faulty concrete buildings don't crack in a earthquake, they collapse in an instant, I've seen couple of old unmaintained concrete 5 story buildings from 40's collapse, after light earthquake.

People in that part of the world, dream of cheap american style homes made out of 2x4, but they have the opposite problem - there are not enough expert carpenters in the workforce, so much so that you can pay them above min wage, usually they are charge really high, and the materials are expensive. Metal and metal workers are cheaper, as well as concrete workers.
And, let's not forget the legislative issues, they have bunch of bureaucratic hell rules there.

>sufficient acoustics
>doesn't feel soul-crushing to be inside
>will still feel reassuring to approach from a distance, rather than scary
One of the main challenges aesthetically is that brutalist buildings almost always exhibit a 'function' for public services, be that a library, government office, theatre, etc. In this paradigm, thinking of your basic needs supplied by a house - living, sleeping, eating - as mere functions is unavoidably soul-crushing. The interiors must feel warm and welcoming despite the undertone of grey - pic related is an attempt at that, although it goes a bit too far imo.

first world poured concrete underground house Chad here. None of it is art homo exposed, it's framed drywall tile etc.

The solid feeling to the whole structure is very comforting and it's so quiet, cost nothing to heat or cool would recommend.

That being said it's not a stack of commie slabs

yeah, cracks can be an issue. while I don't mind the look of them, they let moisture get to the rebar and corrode it, which is actually much more structurally damaging than the cracks themselves

formwork is expensive
high quality aggregate is expensive [you want the concrete to be nice]
finishing the concrete and polishing it [pic related] is expensive
heating rods in the concrete are expensive [expensive to heat]
a lot of architecture experience to make it nice and safe $$$

As someone who has renovated a house before, how do you run wires or pipes through concrete walls like that? It must be hell trying to repair anything lol, fixing a leaking pipe would cost you like $50k just to get the equipment to drill into the wall.

Exactly. The Americans in this thread don’t realize what a luxury their perfectly engineered and framed homes are. Want to remodel a room? That’s easy as ripping down sheet metal and moving support. Have a leak? I can fix that in 10 minutes. Want to move a sink? Easy.

Now try that in a concrete home. Remodel? Impossible. Have a leak? Move out because they are going to need a sledge hammer and a week to find it. Move a sink? Forget about it.

Very easy to find a 100 year old wood frame home still standing in America. Can anyone say the same for a concrete home?

Building a tiny concrete house (3 floors of ~20 sqm each) in Tokyo at the moment and it's preposterously expensive. Thought I could get something aesthetic and cheaply priced like the Azuma residence, but modern regulations prevent going pure brutalist e.g. must have a layer of insulation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xasKnR95r4g&t

The structural elements are costly themselves expensive but everything else (pipes, electrical wiring) becomes much more expensive as they all need to be planned beforehand to work into the solid walls. Hoping it doesn't drive me crazy before I get my country residence and then just use this one as a pied-a-terre.
