Actual blockchain engineer here. Building DAO frameworks and smart contracts for small DeFi projects.

I actually see no use for a decentralized github. Sounds like a useless idea.

A decentralized storage to make open source code available to all, in a decentralized manner?
Sure, use SWARM or IPFS or Filecoin.

Decentralized commits/pull requests, and versioning?

Who the fuck cares. Even a DAO does not care. Who the fuck would use that?

>> No.24268098

>>24267749

Someone doesn’t know anything about the open source world. If DEV captures just 5% of the total OSS market, its mcap would be $1.5B.

Let's envision 5m DEV are in circulation in this scenario (current circ supply is actually 1M). DEV would be $300 in this conservative estimate.

It’s not a decentralized GitHub, buddy. It’s tokenizing open source development on GitHub to create an economy for OSS work which is currently in terrible shape.

Most industry leaders have spoken about this problem in the open source world. See pic related: that’s exactly what DEV is doing.

I think you’re larping as a blockchain engineer or just plain stupid, nice try.

>> No.24268210

"Someone doesn’t know anything about the open source world."

Yeah, right.
For fuck sake I'm a dev for 11 years now.

Still haven't said WHY would DEV captures any % of the Open source market.

I only see DAOs "needing" to have their "codebase" evolving in a decentralized manner, but in the end only the results matters. Whether it's centralized or not, the new modules/microservices will be implemented then integrated by a DAO after some kind of decision making.

But yeah just tell me I know nothing, it will probably be alright

>> No.24268313

but why would I need to buy tokenized github open source code when I can just copy/paste it?

>> No.24268323

> It’s not a decentralized GitHub, buddy. It’s tokenizing open source development on GitHub to create an economy for OSS work which is currently in terrible shape.

It is a decentralized github. If you put a token economy to pay/finance open source developers in a decentralized fashion, you are decentralizing what matters about Github.

It's just a marketplace, again. And again, I don't see why ANY company would use that, and therefore why dev would capture any % of the market. It's like an alternative to ICOs to fund devs to work on a project. Nothing very innovative or needed. (We have ICBOs now and they are fucking efficient)

Small side projects, why not. Nothing that matters.

I’ll tell you why— because they’re working with the pillars of open source work like Red Hat, FairOS, GitCoin and many others.

You keep focusing on the DAO aspect, it’s about tokenizing OSS code repositories and creating a donate-by-staking model that rewards OSS projects.

>> No.24268517

>>24268323
>And again, I don't see why ANY company would use that.

Because it gives them an income stream. Why the fuck wouldn’t they do that? OSS devs rely on donations now. Ethereum’s Vyperlang is already doing that and earned $40k in DEV in 2 months.

You’re clearly deliberately missing the point because you can’t admit your wrong.

>> No.24268608

>>24268419

Do you really think this can become mainstream or even grow?

I don't know any of my colleagues / other devs that would participate in this kind of framework.
The coordinations issues that would arises for any serious projects would be massive. Still some leadership is needed.

It's like "write a line of code here, and mine a few dev, write a line here, another coin..."

If someone has a project, he can raise some funds, have an ICO/bonding curve offering, compose a team and work in perfect harmony without insane coordinations issues.

Again, who the hell would participate in that shitshow?

Honestly appreciate the "idealist" motive behind. But the analogy with RedHat/Linux is wrong on many levels

Are you actually this retarded? Who said anything about a decentralized GitHub? This is literally a way to stake into real life assets. You can support Vyper for example for all the wonderful work we’ve seen in Curve/uniswap.

I am very bullish on and why:
-Highest dev activity on GitHub
-Tokenizing Github (bought by Microsoft
-YouTube next
-Microsoft for startups
-IEO planned
-Get paid in DEV for commits on GitHub soon
-Tokenize anything OS
Two possible scenarios;

a) The top 25 cryptos are valued $1B+ and the Word is traveling. Dev Protocol is the way

DEV protocol will be $300m MC by capturing just 1% of the total OSS market . So MC x60

b) DEV will be $1.5B MC by capturing 5% of the total OSS market....

>> No.24268836

>>24268608
Your ICO idea only works in a crypto environment already with a token. For OSS projects already being used, they have no income stream. They will happily join DEV because it 1) costs them nothing and 2) they get income.

That’s why Chalk came on board even in the early stage. And if the product manager of Red Hat saw promise, I don’t see why your opinion is any more important than his. The cards will fall into place because this is the next step forward for OSS or else the sector is fucked.

>> No.24268899

So if that's just a Tippee for devs, why is so much of a big deal?

If I want to support Vyper, I'll send them some ETH. I don't care about this DEV framework

Again, token not needed

>> No.24268939

>>24268899
>as if you’ll send Vyperlang anything.

Seriously, anon. How often do you donate to any of the OSS work you use and rely on every single day? I bet you like 99% of most people, donate absolutely nothing. This is why OSS is broken now.

>> No.24269022

I actually donated a few times for the free software I use everyday (no blockchain stuff)

But that's not the point. It's not like DEV can fix the OSS world by magically tokenizing it. People can fix it, or not.

Do you actually think I'm wrong?

Open source gets hijacked by big tech. Facebook, Apple etc. have staff that spend time molding open source to their will. Dev will allow independent teams to devote their time to open source while receiving funding and answering to no one.

Also, look at retroactive airdrops to those who donate to gitcoin or belong to moloch dao. There is a game being played and you're not apart of it. Dev fixes this.
