You have likely gotten confused because when you place money with a bank, you are taking on a degree of credit risk - the bank Will use the money for other purposes, they’ll fuck it all up, and when it comes time to return your money they won’t have it available. That’s just credit risk.

I’ve just been through this shit with work in respect to UK client asset rules. We had advice from two magic circle firms. The short version is that no, the certificates do not confer ownership and are worth no more than the price of printing it on a sheet of good quality paper (though if you’re holding someone’s certificates as a bank, they still count as client assets - you just value them at pretty much zero). If we were to lose the certificates, the client doesn’t lose their right to a share of the company. They just have another printed.
