If people want to forgive student debt; why don't we do it, and have it constitute a taxable benefit?

The government can issue a 1099-G for the amount of the loan discharged. That amount is included in income on their next tax return and the tax burden is mostly levied on the individuals who actually took out the loans.

Granted there are a lot of problems with this solution but it's something I've always wanted to discuss.

If your workplace pays part of your student loans it is a taxable benefit. As for why this isn't done? Because the gov representatives don't want to pay 1 trillion in student loans off even subtracting tax revenue.

A bankruptcy lawyer explains how student loan debt is often just the first domino:
Here's what practical experience has taught me in the thousands of bankruptcy cases I've filed for clients: student loan debt perpetuates bankruptcy filings.

A pattern is emerging. Clients making $25,000-$40,000/year with student loans see us every decade to file a new Chapter 7 bankruptcy case. Why? They take out predatory loans and use credit cards to stay afloat. Why? Because the ~$50,000 in student loans wasn't discharged in the last bankruptcy. There are limited programs to get around the debt temporarily, but most are stuck in the cycle.

In a sense, the predatory loans and credit cards they are taking out again and not paying are paying the student loans they're stuck with (i.e. the money being paid on the student loans is offset by dischargeable debt they later take bankruptcy for to stay afloat). It's a vicious cycle.
There are a number of bad reasons to not discharge student loan debt, but there are no good reasons. Literally nothing good is going to come of trying to squeeze even more blood from those particular stones.

How about instead we
-only allow credit to people with credit scores and co-signers or with some sort of equivalent collateral
-idiots stop circle jerking over stroking egos and prestige
-idiots go to a school they can afford if they’re so insistent

Oops I solved the student loan crisis thank me later. Fuck off back to r*ddit

Politics aside, eliminating student debt is the right thing to do. The power of the banks needs to be broken and this is the most effective way to begin doing that. Student loan debt is intrinsically predatory and cannot be justified, especially in light of the massive endowments of the elite universities.

The fact is that most people should not go to college. But if corporations are going to demand worthless pieces of paper for a job, then those worthless pieces of paper should be provided to everyone who wants one for free.

But the evil solipsism of baby boomers can probably be seen most clearly in this quote from Slashdot concerning the student loan debacle. "In response to students burying their obligations in court during the 1970s, anti-default provisions were imposed to make it almost impossible to shed student loans in bankruptcy." In other words, baby boomers took out student loans - in many cases to avoid Vietnam - defaulted on them, then passed a law to ensure that future generations would not be able to do the same. And their student loan debts were far smaller and far less onerous than the ones facing those who have graduated in the 2000s.

It's not about the debt. It's about keeping you a slave. Why do you think that there's such a thing as your parents "making too much money" for you to get a student loan? You don't think that maybe there's something strange about that?

Bailouts are for the banks
Not for the little people:
Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.

Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987. He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.

Congressman Gene Green says the federal government is now using private debt collectors to go after those who owe student loans.

You should be able to discharge it during bankruptcy and loans shouldn't be guaranteed.
This kills multiple birds with one stone.
>It doesn't fuck up the lives of students by giving them debt they can't possibly discharge.
>Lenders now have a stake in what you do with your education using their loan, a lender probably wouldn't be thrilled about your meme degree, but would be willing to negotiate better terms if you go for a degree which has decent earning potential.
>Colleges wouldn't be able to gouge prices as hard since loans artificially increased the amount of money they could extract from students.
>Colleges have to start cutting back on the useless garbage they push, like having insane student:administrator ratios, padding their endowment, or building unnecessary buildings.
I'm still alright with the government negotiating rates with lenders to lower the burden on students (through subsidized loans and the like), but having it be guaranteed is directly responsible for all of the bullshit we're seeing. Perhaps guaranteed federal loans for certain important fields would still be fine. This is actually how it used to work, only certain majors were allowed to have federal loans from about 1958-1965.
I'll bet you could find a decent correlation between the 1965 change to loan eligibility and the prevalence of meme majors, as well as the cost of tuition.

The only way out is getting rid of immigration and the less intelligent cultures. This out of control spending goes hand in hand with left/progressive ideology. The more prevalent it is, the worse it gets.

Ideally the solution is to have an economy that doesn't require absurd amounts of debt to get a decent job, a decent house, etc.

As some others stated. Parts of the system are designed to keep you down. Go debt free if you can. If not, leave the country or band with your brothers to mitigate expenses in life.

Doing it alone, or generally with seemingly a number of women (long term) is what keeps you down. The less people doing student loans and being leeched off of (individuals are easier to keep down than well organized groups), the more reasonable pricing will get.

women in breast cancer groups can get very nasty about this. The one whose prognosis is the worse generally has the worst attitude, and when they die faster are blamed for having a poor attitude and not "thinking positive"

Just because fate is cruel and life is unfair doesn't mean education shouldn't be subsidized. You talk as if debt is immoral, but education costs are one of the only places the economy has seen constant rapid price inflation.
