Look up a military pay calculator, your allowances (BAH, BAS, COLA) aren’t taxable. I wouldn’t join the army or USMC if you don’t want to live in the barracks until you’re a fucking E-5 or w/e and married. I will say when I was in the Air Force as even an E-4 moved out of the dorms in AK with a $500 extra/month cost of living allowance I had plenty of money. I think after tax when I got out as an E-5 I was making like $54k AFTER tax. Too bad I blew every dollar I made and didn’t start investing right out of high school or I’d be fucking set by now. I honestly regret not just sticking it out with all the bullshit and retiring as I’m 30 now and I’d be able to draw a retirement in 8 years LOL. Not sure if the retirement thing is important to you but I’d try to understand the new retirement system you’d be under if you joined now, it used to be more of a pension type system and now they’ve changed it to more of a 401k style retirement.
