>> No.22920353

Essentially, whenever you go to place an order, picture that your order is 'beamed' first to another institution, their computer sees that you're trying to buy GME @10.50, they drive up the price on it so that you pay more for it (and they pocket the difference)
Basically just selling your data so that their computer can make money on the trade you're making
In general, it's not going to affect you - you're not swinging a big account. I have it affect me very rarely in options, where the order book has 600 contracts for sale, and as soon as I hit buy 5 contracts it will readjust temporarily, where these 600 contracts will 'disappear' without any changes in volume / open interest
Don't worry too much about it

look, don't buy TSM just because i said TSM, when you ask for picks, you're expected to do your own DD on it. Or if you were here back in June, it was /smg/'s FOTM for a while.
The only reason it's not trading for at least $120 is because of Taiwan-China tensions.

In the end, it's a bluechip with 2% divvy yields that will continue to grow rapidly. If you're looking for high-risk high-gain pump n dump shit, then look elsewhere

should be mid-October but no set date yet irrc
wouldn't expect much movement, the July rally was an anomaly for TSM, it usually just stays flat through earnings. TSM already does monthly revenue reports so it's usually not a surprise when earnings are good or bad.

unless you want to gamble on what Intel paid to reserve a shit ton of production capacity BUT I doubt this point is coming to fruition until 2021. Intel probably hasn't finished redesigning their products for TSM, and TSM's production was fully booked up to mid 2021 last I heard.

I see TSM more as a pick to dump extra money in without regards to timing. It's crabbing half the time

I've only been trading for a month now and barely just started to understand options. The GME Call option im buying tomorrow will be my first one.
Basically, 1/15/21 is the date that your option contract expires. the $15c means its a call with a strike price of $15. When the strike price is reached, your contract is essentially worthless on the expiration date (since you can purchase the shares on the open market for that price). Prior to expiration, the long call will generally have value as the share price rises towards the strike price.

Yes, ideally you want it to go over 15 and stay over it and then sell well before the expiration so that you don't risk it falling back below the strike, because if it goes below the strike then it will be worthless after expiration. If it's still above the strike after expiration it isn't worthless, it has whatever value there is between the strike and actual current market price x 100 x number of contracts you were holding, but as you said you're better off not actually waiting until then because it's risky.

I decided on ESS. All the things people are stupidly undervaluing in one ticker, meaning it's dropped more than its peers. California rents will always go up but people are scared of riots, fires, the governor, evictions, and foreclosures.
The whole point of California is it's rich enough to shake off all those things in a few years.
>As of December 31, 2019, the company owned interests in 250 apartment complexes, aggregating 60,570 apartment units, and 1 office building comprising 106,716 square feet.
It's down 30 to 40%, I argue on fear alone.
I'm posting here after hours to see if anyone has a better reason to stay away than an imaginary foreclosure crisis.

IV would go up I presume due to the large move

Options pricing is just supply and demand like shares though, the IV is a handwave to get some useful information from the black-scholes model

>Despite the existence of the volatility smile (and the violation of all the other assumptions of the Black–Scholes model), the Black–Scholes PDE and Black–Scholes formula are still used extensively in practice. A typical approach is to regard the volatility surface as a fact about the market, and use an implied volatility from it in a Black–Scholes valuation model. This has been described as using "the wrong number in the wrong formula to get the right price"

complete newbie question but what is the benefit of, say, buying a call for GME at 1/15/21 at 30c versus 20c when you know that 30 as a share price is unlikely for GME to reach? Would having a call option to buy the stock at strike price of $30 yield more profit than a call option at $20?

>> No.22924135

The 30 gives you more leverage so you can make more per dollar invested however it suffers more from time decay and since the strike price is so much higher it has a much worse chance of expiring in the money

Based! Thank you lots man this is exactly what i wanted to know. Which metric can you look at in options chains that let you know how much leverage you have (or how much you can make per dollar). Is that delta? So basically calls at higher strike prices have higher delta?
