I'm 20 years old and have never owned a house personally, but my parents have flipped many houses and made a killing. However the most impressive flip I ever saw was my neighbor. He worked construction and bought what we call in the uk a bungalow, basically a ground floor house. He extended it to include a first floor, and improved some cosmetic features. Took him a year, he made 200k. Since he lived there it counted as a personal home, so he didn't even pay taxes on it. Sure, it's not for everyone, but if you know how to do it right it can be very profitable.

I'll go into more detail:
The trick is to find houses that are dated as fuck, small rooms, funny coloured wallpaper and carpet, but with features that are widely sought after because they're not found in new builds such as different types of flooring, high ceilings etc. You want to knock through the dining room wall and make the kitchen open plan. Rip out and replace the decor. If you do most of the decorating yourself it shouldn't cost too much.

Not everyone does it because its a difficult and daunting task. You have to be willing to sacrifice your weekends renovating this house you put your entire life savings into. My parents did this 21 times. They got divorced and my sister and I are severely traumatised by the whole experience. We wouldn't even unpack boxes because we knew we'd be moving soon. Something you're left without basics facilities for weeks, and you have to wash dishes in the bath tub. The work itself is fucking exhausting. I would personally never take it up because it brings back bad memories.
