The ICO method of distribution basically allows whoever with the most funds to accumulate the supply of a project, whether or not they have the long term interests of the project at heart. Moreover it assumes that all the people who will be interested know about it at the time of ICO and also that they believe in its potentially fully at that point, enough to make a large investment. ICO puts the health and future of your project into the hands of get-rich-quick speculators trying to ride waves of crypto hype booms, who would dump it all in a minute.

Whereas a team distribution is more strategic and allows for intelligent distribution to the right partners and network participants deemed important to grow the network. Many of these participants might view a project at the time of ICO to be too uncertain or risky a buy, and might wait years later, at which point they're basically just buying from whales and scalpers which creates a toxic economy surrounding the coin. Or the coin might simply have been dumped into nonexistence before anyone interested hears of them. Moreover this team-method allows for the coin to be distributed at different advantageous times, which in this case has happened years after the initial ICO. Why would you flood most of a coin's supply into the market when you don't have a mainnet out yet? Or when you know you need to have a mainnet on training wheels for a while to give it a good track record or iron out problems in the beginning, which means holding back much of the coin supply until the project has proven itself? It allows the team to fund themselves by distributing tokens at a time when their project's value is recognized by more people and is higher than at ICO. And it prevents the use of the token as a purely speculative vehicle.

That has to be a very strong support area. $2 per LINK is a dream for a lot of people I bet who were just exposed to the whole oracle problem just this Summer.
