If I'm playing something relatively safe like sector ETFs I generally only buy big on down days so a necessary condition for me to be even doing what I'm doing in the first place is exactly what's going on today. But I don't go all in because there's always a chance things will keep dropping. If the sectors continued to go down for the next few months, I'd accumulate enough that if they ever recovered I'd earn a few years off. If they recover fairly quickly, I earn a few weeks off. If they never recover, it's a bigger problems on my hands situation. In fact, you could make the argument that if they never recover we've all been retired ahead of schedule. That's the type of thing I try to set myself up for. I don't know if they'll be up at the end of the month, I just know what my marching orders are if they are up and what they are if they aren't. Everything in between that is maintaining your psychology well enough that you can continue to execute your strategy, make useful observations, and not dive off a rooftop.
