these past couple of weeks have made me realize that at least in the current economic climate, im just honestly really not okay with hodling a long term position anymore. all of these companies are completely decoupled from their underlying fundamentals, it's all a bunch of hot air.

after the softbank shit came out i realized "i really don't know if i can believe these stocks will keep making new ATH's any time soon". and that's my main deciding factor in holding a long term position that im happy to DCA into. DCA'ing into long positions for swing trades requires faith that the company won't ever dip too much before going back up again, and i just don't have that faith anymore with QE infinity in place and the stock market going up an insane amount while the economy is still in shambles over the pandemic, know what i mean?

DXY stopped going up. You'll notice DXY was on a very strong downtrend until open, QQQ prices correlate with the spike in DXY at 1030 EST. DXY peaked at 1525 EST, which was today's bottom on QQQ.

I don't think it would be feasible across the market, but for a while there were large investors buying enough HTZ in extended hours to make literal retards FOMO into it at open, then sell at the peak of the morning pump. Today's trends did look pretty similar, and TLT/TMF indicate a pretty strong shift into the bond market at 1040

Technically you own shares in bundles associated with the times in which you bought them, instead of just one pool. When you go to sell, you can select a method, and in TDA for instance that will let you select Efficient Tax Loss Harvester, which will pick the worst performing bundle of those stocks you own to prioritize for sale first.

Yep, you're pretty much correct. The only way writing covered calls can truly go against you is if the stock tanks, but you already take on that risk by owning the stock anyway, AND you get the premium so if the stock starts tanking you buy to close the written call and then sell your stock and you're out.
The "worst" thing that could happen is the stock reveals they did something amazing and goes up bigly and you miss out on that gain.

When you sell the contract you collect the premium (minus the broker's fees). If the contract is in the money (ITM) (the stock's market price is over your strike price) it's almost guaranteed the contract gets executed obligating you to sell your 100 shares at the strike price. Since your strike is $1 over your cost basis you will make a profit of $100.

ex.
Anon has 100 WKHS he paid $15/share for.
He sells a CC at a strike of $16 for .85 (the premium), receiving $85 dollars (premium * 100 shares).
WKHS moons, hits $20 by expiry, and Anon's shares are called away for $16/share.
Anon nets $100 for the sale, bringing his profit for the strategy to $185.

However there are some people that assert Anon is a dumbass who actually just lost $315 in potential profits had he just held his sock and sold it for $20 himself.

you can analyze it in other different ways too, 2008 basically gave you the blueprint to be fair. the covid crash top to bottom was around 37% of a drop on the SPY, so if the SPY ever drops around 30% that should be a good place to at least start DCA'ing in to a long term hodl position. that said, the 2008 financial crisis was a 58% drop on the SPY, though i feel it's questionable whether such a drop could happen again due to various new technologies that have been developed and new laws that were put in place as a result of that happening. something to keep in mind, though.

that said, the VIX topped out around 89.5 on 10/24/08 which actually is quite close to the bottom if you want to look at the chart some time. but again, these are once-in-a-decade situations and any time the VIX gets that high it's basically pricing in the apocalypse, so keep that in mind as well. that shit doesn't happen every day you know. that only happens when people unironically think the world is ending for some reason. most of the time the VIX hovers around 10-20 and more common volatility spikes only go around 30-40, maybe 50 sometimes. for an example this recent "tech bubble bursting" with softbank's selloff on thursday and friday got us up to 38 on the VIX. a 20% drop in shit like AMD in just 2 days for seemingly no reason didn't even get us over 40.

i assume with cruises and airlines you'll be fine in the sense that you probably don't care what they do until a vaccine comes out and people actually start regularly flying/cruising again, yes? if so then you shouldn't give a fuck what price does until that happens, all you should worry about is whether whatever you're invested in could go bankrupt or not. as long as they won't i'd say you're fine assuming that's the play you're making, a play which could take years to unfold but could give big gains if it works out eventually. me personally, im waiting for an actual covid recovery to start taking place (i.e. a working vaccine comes out which doesn't paralyze people's spines) before i actually look into making one of those plays. still plenty of money to be made then imho

Maybe. But what reason do we have for going higher? Macros are literal depression. The only thing keeping things from falling apart was the stimulus and hope for more. Now that they are turning off the tap, things are about to get real ugly. The only thing to sustain the rally would be a big announcement of more stimulus. Since that isn’t happening, I don’t know why things would continue higher.

I actually like horse overall but no, it's not the next big thing I think. The next big thing requires the same thing every other thing before it has always needed:
- massive control (NET or Netflix-tier) even before it's worth anything
- Meme appeal (either a meme CEO like musk, a monopoly like NET, a b2b meme like IBM's "nobody's ever gotten in trouble for buying IBM", or some such)
- A moment-capture (TSLA is doing a straight 1:1 jobs-clone AAPL play and rerunning 20 years old tech while pretending to have invented it -- that works. Another way is to be moderna if the mrna vaccines actually work (but they won't). Pioneering the next generation of internet works too.
- Mass appeal (everyone knows what a car is and does, but a truck?)

It's not even difficult
A Covered call require you to have 100 shares for each contract and a Cash secured put requires collateral (money) to buy the 100 shares, If it's ITM you get assigned and keep the premium, if not it expires worthless and you still keep the premium
All I do is sell premium

>> No.22396844

>>22396724
This case I showed was a covered call yes.
When you sell a covered call, the "covering" comes from owning 100 shares of the underlying stock for each call you sold. So, in the event your call gets exercised, the call holder buys your 100 shares at the strike price. It would be possible to sell calls without covering, but that entials potentially unlimited risk. If the stock just mooned like crazy, you could be on the hook for a huge amount of money. Brokers would't let normies like me do it, so we have to be "covered:

Puts are diffferent. Puts are a contract to buy stocks at the strike price. They are "covered" by cash. My broker won't let me write a put unless I have the purchasing power available to buy 100 shares of the stock at the strike price of the put.

Covered calls and puts can be chained in a cycle called "the wheel"

sell puts on a stock until you get assigned, buying 100 stocks. Then, sell covered calls on the stock until your calls get exercised, and you get put back into cash and start the cycle over.

Got a apple 150 end of October call after our first leg down. Hell we were cruising it seemed reasonable. Thennnn bought a sqqq call and got week hands on the fag pump yesterday and sold out. Then bought a spy call this morning thinking we may come back. Got weak again. So technically I've only fucked myself

Thats fair.

What I'm banking on is oil and natural gas as my major investments.

I'm bleeding everyday with XOM, NGL, HPR and Oasis but they all have pretty strong balance sheets.

Oasis is a bit concerning since it may get delisted since its come down to less than $1.

OTC pink sheet still works for me though. They did better than they expected this past quarter and its majority of shareholders are institutional.

I was planning on cashing out in at least 1 year from now.

Love seeing the daily shit show though lol

I've been selling my calls about two weeks to a month out at prices that I feel would be unlikely to be assigned (I didn't really think tqqq could reach 165 by sep 18, even though I own it i'm not THAT bullish). Then I generally buy them back once (if) we have a big dip. Obviously I could have made a lot more profit here if I had sold at a lower strike, but increased the risk it would get assigned and i'd lose my shares. You've just got to use whatever tools or intuition you have available to you.

Simultaneously buying+selling the same contract terms is effectively nullifying the position you opened, as you would theoretically neutralize the premium you gained selling the option by buying it back. In that case you might as well have just held onto the equity/cash position and let it float on the market.
