In short, the network has value and future value worth a lot more than saving a few thousand dollars in that attack. the Node operators could easily have stopped answer or went offline till the spam ended, and saved thousands of dollars. but the Nodes thought that it was financially worth it to stay online, answer them, and keep their uptime and reputation as high as possible than it was to lose that and go offline temporarily.
