old BMW's are generally a terrible idea, very poor reliability, even if well maintained.
If you want a reliable luxury daily car then get a Lexus. Alternatively, buy a newer reliable econobox as a daily and get yourself something nice for the weekends.

BMW petrols are reliable, diesels cost a fortune to repair. Suspension components are expensive. If suspension has no knocks, clunks or vibrations then they are decent reliable cars. Avoid diesels like the plague. Look up common faults for e60 and be sure to check for them before purchase.Iirc the steering motor goes on these and costs a fortune.

You're going to need a LOT more than $2k per year to fix and maintain it bruv. I'm Clapistani, but I assume these cars are a pain in the ass and unreliable as hell in Europe as well.

buy a facelift, very important! The first gen has a ton of problems. Go for 200.000 km, 300.000 is a lot for a 520, but ok for a 540 v8 with good services. 2k should be ok. Dont go for the 520 Diesel, they also has a lot off unsolved problems. Best choice is the 530i.

There's a nice looking 525 3.0 145kw 2008 diesel with 250k km costing about $7k. I'm guessing that's a money pit as well? Problem with gasoline cars here is that gas costs 1.3x more than diesel and diesel cars consume less as well compared to gas cars so really I'll be paying 2x more for gas.

if you need to change the breaks , go for a pair EBC Red Stuffs with EBC Turbo grooves, exelent brekas! The OEM sucks and ATE sucks too.

motorwise yes but you need to check on the waterpump, thermostat, servo tank, DISA, sensor for airquality, new battery, new oil of course, probably new sealings, maybe radiator hose and new coolant, new tires, new ignition coils to be on the safe side, a new chassis, strut bearings, track rod end and when youre unlucky a new power steering pump.
but otherwise the E60 is a beautiful BMW with a very good engine.
