I think when people say rural they mean "outskirts of a big city"

Small towns here in New York have a population of 1-3k spread out across 40+ square miles. Usually half of the population of the town lives in a 1-2 square mile village where all the shops are clustered, so the rest of the town is very sparsely populated. It's rural as fuck outside of big cities.

I lived in a rural area as a kid not far from a medium sized city. It was comfy, parents often took us on travels so we could see the world though.
Imo a rural area is the best place to raise kids, they have place to play outside, live with animals, do a lot of outdoor activities.

When they reach their 20s they will in most case want to live in a city but by that time you gave them a healthy and happy childhood which will make balanced non degenerates.
