What are the most profitable majors in which I can invest my education?

People keep saying things like petroleum engineering, accounting, or nursing, but everyone at my university has or currently is majoring in that, so I'm guessing it'll end up like the popular majors of the past and have more applicants than openings.

What do you see having lots of openings in the next 5 years?

Yeah yeah.

I hate when people suggest something like investment banking to me when I'm going to a generic state university in central Appalachia, the land of nojobz, and for some reason have no desire to move to a city at all.

I guess I'll forever remain unemployed.

Easier said than done.

Besides, I don't even really know what "industry" I want to work in. I just want a steady income so I can finally be independent, and doing a job that won't make me feel suicidal would be nice too.

I worked retail like Wal-Mart and Lowe's and it was utter shit, and I worked in a call center contracted by the Bank of America and it was even shittier.

Computer Science is how you can get the big bucks from a tech company like Google, Amazon, or Microsoft.

There's also plenty of lower-paying openings all over the country for software engineers.

>> No.210943

If you want the best ROI, you should:
>major in Business Admin / Finance / Accounting / (maybe Statistics)
>Study hard, get good grades
>Get an internship
>Graduate and work for a few years
>Then get an MBA
>Seek jobs at fortune 500 companies
You'll be enjoying a 6 figure salary in your mid to late 30's.

>> No.210959

>>210943

Or you could...
>Major in Computer Science
>Don't suck at it
>Get a smalltime internship after sophomore year
>Intern at big tech after junior year
>Get 6 figure offer for after graduation

Worked for me, anyway.

Jack of all Engineering
Master of none

Pretty much the joke of our department since most of their courses are watered down ChemE/MechE/EE/IE courses. You're far better off in a legitimate field of Engineering that closest you what ever specialization you were going to pursue as employers vastly prefer the mainstream engineering majors when hiring.

What's accounting like? I looked up the salary today and median was like 50-60k. How hard is it to make 6 figures? Also what does the actual job entail? I'm starting to think this might be the path for me.

Why are you doing this.

Pick a goal job or field first, then pick your major as a vehicle to reaching that goal. Why in the world would you dive head first unless it's an extremely versatile major with tons of useful applications to begin with?

>> No.212416

Because there's a lot of variety with the degree, but I don't know what's a good job to apply for. I know most graduates start of as Analysts

I know I want to something administrative with systems. I just don't know what is available to me with minimal experience.

Fresh grads can expect anything from mid 40k to low 60k as starting salaries depending on where you are.

Your job is very different depending whether you're tax, audit, consulting, public, private, etc....

>> No.212439

>>212414
Those kinds of salaries are only available to people doing the public accounting deal. When I first got out of school I tried and failed to get a job with a public accounting firm (first the Big 4, then the midsizers) before giving up and getting trapped in the A/R vicious circle in order to pay off my student debt. I was only making a little over $30,000 a year. Got a 1.2% raise, but considering inflation was running about 2.0% my real salary went down. The most retarded thing was they refused to hire anyone with less than a years' experience and a university degree even though a fucking brain-dead high schooler could do that crap.

It was by pure chance that I met a partner at a mid-size accounting firm and managed to escape that hellhole. I pity those that can never get out.

>> No.212449

a major isn't worth shit. just get a degree and get a fucking job working long hours at work you care nothing about to earn money that isn't worth anything to but shit you don't need

seriously. how many of you stem master race faggots envision a life of joy sitting at a desk doing math?

I'd rather have no degree and live life on my own terms.

Did you try small ones? I'm doing an internship at a small place now, and it's great. My internship is basically a guaranteed job offer upon graduation because of how small it is. It's a lot easier getting into these small places, and if you have a niche skill that they need like foreign language or something, they really want you badly. My interview with them felt like they were basically begging me to work for them. (My GPA isn't even high, it's only a low 3.X)

OP, consider picking up Worthless or Bachelor pad economics by Aaron Clarey. He is sort of like that cool uncle nearly young man or woman needs because he tells you how this crap works and can help guide you toward majors and career paths which aren't stupid. I've learned a lot from the guy and really respect his views.

This anon has it right, a lot of boomers and gen xers have dead end jobs in A/R without having accounting degrees. My aunt is one of them, she never went to college

On the other hand, if you can go public for 3-5 years, then turn around and become a manager at a corp that will only work you 40-50 hours per week for 80-100K per year, you're set for life

>>212475
You'll have to network extensively with a GPA in the low 3's/4.0. The Big 4 usually only take the best and brightest CPA's unless you have a connection

I only have a 3.2 average at my school, but thankfully my best friends uncle is a partner at one of the Big 4 firms, so I'm not worried about running around trying to schmooze the recruiters because I already know where I'm going to go
