I think you're missing the point, anon. Chainlink is *above* ethereum. ETH can go to $0 and chainlink wouldn't budge. They're completely decoupled, because chainlink is it's own network, with adapters for contract platforms. Every contract platform like ETH has to support Chainlink to have access to oracles, and contracts are only useful with oracles. Hence Chainlink inevitably replacing BTC as the digital money. It can't be regulated away, it's just the way game theory works. Chainlink is the nash equilibrium of power consolidation.

But there is always a chance to lose something if you do something wrong.
Today, the node operators are all known by name; so if they cause a large loss, they would be held accountable through traditional avenues (lawyers, courts, ...)

The whole point of staking is to make this accountability decentralized and trustless.
Wrong data? Lose some money you put up as collateral.
