If not, why don't you have your seed words at at least 2 different locations (e.g. parents house and your house, etc), to protect against stuff like house fires? You plan to lose everything to a fire when this technology can safeguard against that?

Also, why is it lying around on a piece of paper? Why isn't it hidden neatly away, not easily accessible (like being written in code in some book on the bookshelf)? Or would you like a house burglar that knows about crypto be able to easily steal everything from you because you couldn't be bothered to make up some code to hide it, and find a concealed inconspicuous location to write it at?

That said, you WILL need to program to solve this. The difficulty of what you need to learn depends on whether the last word is missing or not.

If you have the last word, that's a CHECKSUM. So you can just bruteforce the other 4 words, then check the checksum each time if it matches. That's probably a 5-15 minute programming effort from someone who knows how to program (just use crypto libraries to do the hard work).

If you lost the last word, that's TOUGH. You'd need to generate the wallet each time, derive some addresses and check their balance. You will probably need to run a local node, and download the blockchain (probably hundreds of gigabytes) and learn how to check for balances and transactions, as using any online wallet API will probably get you rate-limited for such a project. This would be over a week of effort for someone who already knows programming basics.

Do you have the last word or is it lost? That's a huge factor.

I did something similar:
- AES encrypted with a long random key,
- then I encrypted that key using 2 different keys:
- - one key something only I know about
- - one key can be constructed from multiple shared secrets I emailed to multiple loved ones. (I know they never delete emails, and luckily they all have multiple emails - gmail yahoo etc. so they all have more than 1 copy each)

I wrote a tool that can decrypt it with their keys, stored in my laptop. And I have a will that instructs them where the program is and how to use it, as well as what keyword to use searching their emails to find the keys I emailed to them, and where my encrypted wallet is. As well as how much is involved, so they don't get lazy and avoid the "hard stuff". The tool is easy, basically plug all the keys in, the encrypted wallet file, and it spits out the seed words. There's also a blank hardware wallet with it they can enter the seed words into.

All they know is I have a will, it's stored in the safe in my room. They have no idea of everything else, or that crypto is even involved.

Well that's just terrible.

If you had the last word, all you would have needed was to download something like the bip39check library from github (a few kb), write a program that checks if the bruteforced words match the required last word (probably under 100 lines), and you're done.

Without the last word, you'd need to download and install the actual node software of each coin you had (bitcoin core for BTC, geth etc) download the blockchains (almost 300 GB for bitcoin, over 1 TB for ETH and ERC20 tokens like Link), learn how to programmatically generate wallets from bruteforced words, check programmatically if the wallets had transactions and balances by talking to the nodes, and you have to learn to do this again for each coin (BTC, then ETH, ERC20 tokens). Really tough.

But you may be able to avoid that.
Here are some important things you should know about seed words that might help you guess it:

- only the first 4 characters in a seed word matters. Google "bip39 wordlist", and you will see, the first 4 letters of each word is unique. Because that's all you need. It doesn't make a difference if the word is "ability" or "abilities" or "abilhsjfbkdosjsl". Maybe you can make out the first 4 letters.

- not all words in the dictionary are valid. Google "bip39 wordlist". You might be able to make it out from the smudge.

- if you're gonna program it, the last word is derived from the other words. So you actually only need to bruteforce 3 words.

- check_for_balance_or_transaction (this one is a doozy. If you had the last word, you wouldn't need this part). This has to do it for each coin (BTC, ETH, Link etc)

I would recommend you send this "pseudocode" to a dev and ask them to write it for you. Most probably can do it without even having your seed words. They just need to know which positions the missing words are at.

The only caveat is making sure they don't write a program that can steal your seed words. But you can probably run it on an airgapped machine (no wifi no Ethernet no Bluetooth no connection whatsoever).

I'm guilty of using software wallets. I need to get a hardware wallet. It's getting to that point where it would actually really hurt to lose. Feel like a nano ledger x would be a lot more secure.
