Strength is derived from the recruitment of muscle fibers, this is why new trainees advance so quickly, because their nervous systems are being trained to use muscle they already have. Once you plateau in the strength phase you will spend time doing volume to increase mass and therefore the number of fibers you can recruit.

you can measure progress with numbers, during strength and hypertrophy phases your lifted weight should steadily increase, when doing hypertrophy work you’ll need to do some experimentation to find the right weight, start heavily deloaded and see how you feel. I really don’t like AMRAPs all that much, I prefer having specific rep ranges spread out across multiple sets, it’s safer and your work will be more effective. In the gym it is fairly easy to do too much volume, which is counterproductive. If you are exhausted all the time and you struggle to get enough rest between workouts then you probably are doing too much.

During strength phases you really don’t have to do much work, as you get stronger you will do more sets but only a few reps in each one, it’s high intensity training not endurance
