Mechanical engineer, I work in MEP so it's pretty much designing HVAC and plumbing systems for new or existing buildings. And managing the projects before/during design and construction phases.
I would have told my dad that, but I was such a brainlet that I didnt really understand what "engineering" meant at 18. I thought it was like computers or some shit. I pretty much suffered through college, I'd say halfway through my first engineering class in freshman year, I knew I didn't belong. But I was on student loans and my brother flunked out of college so I thought I can't let my parents down. Looking back, I wish I went into computer/software engineering or accounting if I were to go to college. I was able to pass the classes because I am good at adapting; I can learn enough to pass a class, I can memorize shit, but I'm not a "critical thinker" and I'm not very technical. I think accounting would've been way easier for me. You can 'learn' that without having to be a genius. With engineering I just feel stressed out at my job because I have to try too hard to keep up. It honestly gives me anxiety

I think my two choices are either go for my P.E. license and get a comfy/lazy government job, or do something like you suggested. Working for a private engineering consultant has been hell to me, because I feel like I don't belong and am faking it 100%. And since its a private company, it's extremely deadline-driven and profit driven. I've been able to stay afloat but I act like I'm 500x happier than I actually am, and have to work harder than most around me just to understand shit that I see every day.
