Gold is how you actually preserve your wealth. You convert the gains which you make in miners into gold, in order to ensure that they will last. Also, nobody should be without a core position in physical gold, just in case the mines get nationalized, or the whole system suddenly fails and collapses. (See gold's resilience in the March crash vs the miners as an example of this.)
