Could someone explain put buying to me in caveman terms? I'm looking to try my first options play with AMPY because it's stupid cheap and potentially less risky, but I don't understand the options numbers. The market price for AMPY right now is 1.27, and I think it could go down before going up, so wouldn't buying puts be a way to make money off of it? Why is the lowest put price $2.50? Should I be looking at the break even price? For example, an August 21 $7.50 put is $6.25 today. What in the world could someone do with that? Only works with stocks with option chains. Covered calls involve selling a contract so that the buyer can purchase batches of 100 shares from you at a certain price (strike) by a certain date (expiration). Continuing the analogy. All that matters is if the market price (what you can get right now for the box) is above the agreed upon "pre-order" price (strike price in options lingo). In both cases, you collected a fee.
If the market price never goes above your strike price, that option is worthless to the seller. You get to keep your boxes (to perhaps sell to someone else) and you keep the fee.
If the market price goes above the strike price, that option is now like a discount for the buyer. They will purchase the box from you at that previously agreed upon price.
That second option isn't that bad if you are smart about it. If you originally purchased it from a distributor for $100 and the "pre-order" price was $150 where the pre-order fee was $5 then you only wind up having to see at $150 and you get the $5 fee too. So you made $55 and if the price hadn't gone up you'd have collected the $5 fee anyway effectively "reducing" what you paid for the box to $95
To tie it back to my original post, this only feels like a "loss" if you could have sold that box to someone else for $200. But you still made money either way. It is one of the safest option plays that exist.
