From personal experience, I can tell you that it's pure denial and blind optimism.

For example, I've been day trading for the last month. I didn't have a red day until yesterday. My problem was that I bought calls right before the selloff. Literally three or four minutes before. It was so sudden and absurd I thought it had to reverse and return to normal, but it didn't. I continued to watch as the price went further and further down with unprecedented vigor and relentlessness. I completely abandoned my stop loss and held, because I thought it had to be a fluke.

You keep telling yourself, "It has to go up. It has to go up." You convince yourself that it's already so far down that you can sell for less of a substantial loss later. Yes, it's stupid. Yes, it's irrational.

Part of me thinks to YOLO AMZN $4000c 9/18 because their 1-year graph looks exponential and I just have a feeling with the shit storm coming from COVID this back-to-school season they're poised to become an even stronger monopoly and hit 2T market cap.
