I have a PhD in Physics and an online certificate in business and finance from Coursera. I just accepted a call centre job earning $25k a year. AMA

no way would i say im qualified for even the entry level jobs i apply for, but they still ask for 2 years min xp. shits fucked

i entertained the possibility of getting a job in this area once, so know a thing or two. basically you need to know:
1) python (including a web dev framework like flask or django). knowing java would also be an advantage, but not essential
2) sql (mongodb, mysql or postgres)
3) html/css, javascript
4) docker and kube
5) git
6) travis cli
7) intermediate knowledge of at least 1 cloud platform (AWS is normally preferred)
8) linux
9) bash scripting
10) devops tools (there are several here just google)
11) algorithms and data structures (to pass interviews)

I wish I was joking

Also, if I was hiring a junior developer at my place most of those things I would expect them to learn on the job. As long as they knew the basics they could start on a junior dev salary and work their way up.

Focus on:
Algorithms and data structures
JS/HTML/CSS
Linux
Bash

and if you really want to stand out some Node.js and some DB technology

>> No.20163775

>>20163741
Cool, you found one job listing that requires python. Hint, most of them wont.

Especially if you have an interest in cloud tech like AWS or serverless frameworks. All of that will most likely be using Node.js

Yes, a lot of companies still use a lot of Java, but that will mostly be big enterprise stuck on legacy platforms.
If you want to get in somewhere using more modern tech and cloud platforms you'll be fine with JavaScript.

A PhD is worthless unless you make significant contributions in terms of publications.

Questions you should ask yourself:
1) Are you deeply passionate about your subject? When I say deeply I do not mean reading wikipedia articles about it and watching 3Blue1Brown
2) Are you prepared to read thousands of papers and come up with an original research idea to publish?
3) Are you prepared to cut corners for the sake of publishing papers?

>>20165048
Yeah that was my reasoning for turning it down. I did really well throughout undergrad research, even got a publication, but seemed like the successful PhDs basically dedicated their life to the topic. I liked the subject but it wasn't my entire life. I remember being fairly frustrated with the whole academia system.

Still, it feels more fulfilling than what I am doing now. Maybe I'm just looking backed with rose tinted glasses.
