Getting fucked by theta is the main one. You're introducing risks in situation where risk is unnecessary.

Say you have 100 205 MSFT calls right now for 7/10. It's worth 18.3k. Lets say that microsoft stagnates all week and never actually makes it to 205. If you held the entire time it'll expire worthlessly. Next lets say it did make 206 and on 7/10 you exercise it.

You've just made 10k. Not only did you lose 8.3k compared to if you just sold it two weeks ago. If you wanted to make the same profit it'd have to reach 206.83.

That's why you re-enter with better options. You sell to lock in profit now that you're ITM/ATM and you buy either a farther way option to not get fucked by decay or you buy an OTM call so you can enter with a larger position for cheaper or both. You'd have made dramatically more money if you sold for 18.3k and re-enter at 210 for 7/10 for 6k. You now have 12.3k profit and you have 6k on 210 and if it moons to 215 that 6k will balloon into something ridiculous.

The important thing is exercising is higher risk, lower profit, and less flexible with what you can do.
