It's cheaper to maintain an empty apartment.

If the tenant can pay anything (at least, enough to cover maintenance and wear-and-tear), then sure it's still making money. But if not, it's cheaper to kick them out and have an open apartment.

And the cost of having a tenant is surprisingly high.

The majority who have been laid off are at the bottom of the income distribution. These people are the least likely to own a home, and many of them will go back to work anyway once the gibs end. For the few who do own houses and cant find a job after the gibs end there is an army of boomers and Chinese with plenty of cash to buy their foreclosed starter homes (the most desirable homes on the market) from the bank and rent them out just like in 2008

I would like to work doing things directly for the benefit of my family or my community, but you can't really do that and survive anymore, you can only work to make other people richer and live off whatever scraps they think you deserve after they take 95% of it away for their profit and then taxes. then the government uses that money to kill people. it's hard to function knowing this is the reality

I agree with you. But your options are to be the person everyone is working for (not my thing), change the system (unlikely), be a drain on society (also not my thing) or apply some lube, go to work, and improve your and your family's life however you can and enjoy your free time. It's not perfect but I like paved roads, electricity and other first world comforts. If I didn't I could always fuck off to somewhere else. The fact is we'll never be cooperative enough to form a utopian society and for every leech there's gotta be a drone, otherwise there is no first world. At least this way I have a modicum of control over my destiny and don't have to rely on muh gubbment to take care of me. I know it's a lot to ask these days, but everyone is gonna have to put on their big boy pants and realize you can't only take without ever putting anything in.

The problem with a housing crash is that while property prices go down, banks also become ridiculously stingy about giving out loans. Meaning that unless you have enough money to outright buy a house in cash, you still won't be able to take advantage of the situation anyway.
