Can someone tell me how options really work? Let's say a stock is $20 and I buy a put that says it will go down to $17 within a week. I pay $100 for this put. Let's say the stock goes down to $18 the next day. I'm still in a loss, correct? I'm confused by the idea that an option is worth less and less as the final date looms around. And how do I know how much money I can make if it dumps to, say, $16 as opposed to $17. RH sometimes shows that graph bar that tells you exactly how much you can make, other times it doesn't.

No, unless your put was in the money when you bought it (because time may decay it right below break-even, you might be in deficit by maybe $1).
If your option is far out and out of the money, (say, months out), it will barely be affected by 1 day. However, if your option expires tomorrow, it is extremely quickly going to react to 1 day.

Hey guys. I have a stock for you to. Check out. I’ve been riding this one for five years or so now. IPIX has the patent on a drug (Brilacidin) that has been tested against COVID and the recent results are causing the stock to shoot through the roof. I’m hesitant to say that we’re going to the moon because I’ve seen this stock stagnate for years and years, but things are looking really positive now. Check it out for yourself. Current price: $0.44. Price last week: $0.15

I have 15k shares, so I’m
Excited.

Premium calculations take into account stock price, volatility, and time to expiration. As an insurance policy, the riskier the stock (volatility), the higher the premium. The longer until it expires are more "monthly payments" (sometimes called extrinsic value). So all options are constantly losing value due to time decay.
As for a put. If the stock price goes below the strike price then yes, you begin making money on the difference. If it stays above, it is worthless.

I've tried pointing this out but no one will take me up on a conversation about it - practically every stock I have in my portfolio has obvious peaks around April 7th, April 29th, and June 5th, followed by a sharp decline, a smaller climb, then a crab until the next climb. I'm not claiming there has to be some pattern, but the same peaks and dips across all stocks seems less-than-random. Have there been events happening around these peaks? If the pattern continues, we're in the small upswing right now and it should be followed by some crabbing then another sharp upward climb

>What does this mean though? Would I make more money if it dumps to the "break even" earlier than expected and I sold it off early?
When you initially buy the option the premium price is already reflecting the remaining time left until expiration. It is usually a bad idea to sell early (before a week or two out) even if in the money because even if it IS, people who bid on your contract will discount remaining time for swings or dips (depending on volatility of the underlying). But you also have to weight what you think will happen before expiration. Typically you "lock in" the price difference between the strike price and current price of your put when sold about a week before expiration because the time uncertainty is rapidly approaching zero.

On expiration date yes.
But your contract should now be worth more because it is closer to the money.
That is why you should buy options with more time to expire unless you think it will drop or rise really fast.

For example.
Last weak I bought a Deutch Bank 8.60P for 23 Aug. When the stock was at 8.80.
Paid 74€ for it.

Next day the S&P dropped 6%, DBK followed and dropped to 8.20.
Technically, not in profit yet because 8.60-0.75 is 7.85.
But since now it is way more probable that it will reach that price, the contract went up to 100€ so I sold and got 25€ profit.

I love Tesla but their market cap is overblown.
How can Tesla have more cap than the VW group and Porsche combined?

Porsche is biting their ankles at the luxury level while VAG is chasing them on the mass market.

Tesla stock is unsustainable.
The reason it is so high is because it basically emcompasses SpaceX, solarcity and the Booring company. Which is debatable.

How does this shit work: Company pays out part of its profits to shareholders in the form of dividends.

Is there a catch: yes. things to consider when dividend investing (1) Taxes. depending on your income, they're likely taxed at 15%, regardless of whether or not you reinvest them. You can avoid this in a tax advantaged account but risk penalties if you want to retire early. (2) The share price is "supposed" to drop in accordance with the dividend payout. In actuality, this doesn't necessarily happen.

They just give you money: Yes and you can choose to utilize a dividend reinvestment program (DRIP) to automatically reinvest in the same company (this is what I do for 99% of my shares), use the cash reinvest the dividends in any other company, or spend the cash on daily life.

Here in Maine, boreal forest is a welcome respite from the chilling sub-Arctic winds sweeping across the plains, and when the cold fogs roll in from the coast we abandon our icy shacks and flee to the trees with our families. We hunt skinwalkers to wrap our children in because no mere textile can keep the wind from freezing them solid. Last winter my wife and I only managed to ambush one so we had to place it over both of our kids and then go deeper into the darker parts of the woods together where I was able to generate enough friction and circulation by flicking her bean to keep us both alive via body heat. I flicked for two weeks straight and have severe arthritis in both hands and my wife is in an asylum still recovering from the cumulative afterglow.

Im not feeling confident but i hate seeing those 5 digit cash on my bank account every single time not moving and retailkeks extending the current economic bubble cycle

i don't want to discourage you from investing in these companies because I believe both will be around long term.

at my point in my investing career, im risk adverse and drawn to companies that have stability in payments and high dividend CAGR so that my future payments will increase faster with less capital needing to be invested.

Just because nogs breed faster, doesn't directly correlate to their purchasing power. This simple thought experiment goes as follows: if a white man has $10 how can he spend it? If a billion nogs have a handful of dirt where do they spend it?
Consider the following, only intelligible humans that actively partake in society can benefit from it and calling nogs human is a fucking stretch.

There’s a famous research paper, by Fama I think, that shows 90% of stock returns are driven by the overal market, and 8% are driven by the sector.

It’s not hard to see that if a systemic change would benefit target, it would also benefit Walmart. It’s why stock move together. Economic prospects are linked together in an advanced, interconnected system.

Actually you probably can, the app sometimes bugs and actually allows it which someone could easily make the purchase of on accident.

t. Happened to someone who sold naked calls (when they were buying not selling so the app may have bugged out) on a stock on accident with no stock held as collateral. Pop up of infinite risk never appeared either. He took a hit closing the calls.
