a margin account lets you borrow
if a stock is at $90, and you short 2 shares of it it using your margin account, it means you borrowed 2 shares from your broker and sold it right away at that price. some other buyer bought it for $90. so you get that money, but you owe your broker now -2 shares of that stoc. if the price goes down to $80, you can now buy 2 shares, and that closes the short because you basically return the 2 shares to your broker. and you profit $20 from the difference.

Nah, just got it all turned around. In order to initiate a short, you are borrowing shares from your brokerage. To start the trade, you sell those borrowed shares at market. To exit the trade, you then buy the same amount of shares you previously sold and return them to your brokerage. Look at Nvidia, plenty of market share to try and capture. Technology demand, like energy typically only rises, stagnates briefly, then innovation brings on the new wave.

I don't know. Yesterday I called the price action during futures and premarket dirty. It was. Upon further inspection I think that was the nastiest anti-retail trader move I have ever seen. Keep going back and back in the chart and there isn't much to compare it to. Fed makes pretty middle of the road expected statements. Markets flops around like fish out of water as usual for a bit but stabilizes around flat. Five minutes prior to close you get a 0.5% sell off. No news after close. Futures open neutral, then low volume but apparently unchallenged aggressive selling starts. This continues for hours and finally around midnight there is an additional spike in selling volume. Premarket gaps down considerably, again barely challenged by buy side.

Filthy. One day I want to learn what happened. Guaranteed there is a story there.

buying shorts is buying actual shares of the stock, with a contract to sell back to your broker at the specified amount. when you buy those shares, it is buy volume just like every other buy of that stock, which makes share price incresease
