I haven't looked at either companies financials but Ruger is a solid company, good guns, good quality, good customer service, does attempt to expand market share with stuff like the Ruger 5-7, pistol in a Belgian snowflake caliber that was previously pretty much only used by the FN 5-7, which is retardedly overpriced.
Smith and Wesson have had some rocky years, I've heard their revolvers have had QC issues and the "Hillary holes" got them some flak but they're moving away from that now. Their carry handguns are very popular, and I personally think they're great, I have an M&P 9 2.0. They also recently split off their stock from AOBC and will now be their own ticker. They're both good companies.
