So we stayed with his aunt and visited an uncle and a brother of his. They were set up in this neighborhood of stately 2 storey Victorians or some such time frame. You know, towering trees lining the streets, very tall houses set on large lawns of varying quality. The three houses I saw all had the tall ceilings you'd expect in old houses. Gingerbread trim, wainscoting, iron radiators, odd looking chandelier and sconce fixtures. Ancient plumbing, 150 year old linoleum.

but the other thing I saw in those three houses at least was that they were impeccably maintained. I live in a town full of old Victorian houses that aren't maintained, I know how that goes. After a century and a quarter they seriously fall apart. None of that crap at the ones I saw in Philly though. Good drywall, good floors, working electric and plumbing. Someone had done some serious work on them over the years. Not updated or remodeled, it looked like something right out of the 1800's. But clean, solid, in good repair.
