eth is currently just a normal crypto, only thing that really distinguishes it is it's size, it's going to do 2 things to change that
switch from proof of work mining to proof of stake
implement sharding
currently it's mined like almost every crypto is, it's going to switch from mining to staking, where you don't rely on hashpower to secure the network, but have validators put their own eth on the line to ensure the network is running
a limited start of that is expected late july
sharding is switching the network from 1 to over 100, massively increasing the amount of transactions per second
eventually there's supposed to be staking and sharding, but it's been delayed for about 5 years now, currently eta is 2021

I think it's promissing, if you have $1-2k that you can lose 100% of I'd buy 5-10 eth and hold for a year or two
