I won't go into details, but I've been asked to become an "expert-level economist" by October.

Doable? Where would I start?

Serious answers only, please.

Personally, I don't think it's possible. But I'm being assured by very smart people that it is.

I think they're overestimating my intellectual capabilities. No easy way to inform them about it, though.

I don't know what an 'expert level' economist is or what you are now, but I've learned that people are not good at evaluating their own abilities. If people above you trust your abilities enough to vouch for you and put themselves on the line, believe them when they say you can do something

Hey OP, serious answer... if I were faced with your situation (which sounds bizarre btw), I would start by reading all of Nassim Taleb's books. Fooled By Randomness and Black Swan are probably the best ones to start. While reading these, contrasts that with research on global trade. Which countries import and export what? This will give you a bird's eye view of everything that's going on in geopolitics. Try to understand bits of world news you read within that bigger context, and hopefully a holistic understanding of economics will begin to emerge for you.

I emphasize Taleb because he seems to have the best technical understanding of how the world works, and he will start you off in a way that completely avoids the various thinking traps most people fall into when trying to tackle these topics. Hope this helps.

No, you haven't.

>Doable?

For you, een if that even existed and was a real thing? No. Learn to troll better, you have better odds of succeeding there.

>Where would I start?

Try fucking yourself.

Economics is a big field. What do you need to learn? It's very different to study macroeconomics and microeconomics or get into econometrics.
