Reasons tanker stocks are crashing to bankruptcy and how to profit

Try to stay focused on the fundamentals people (because I put the fun in fundamental get it?

1. Contango almost gone
2. Daily rates crashing to all time lows
3. Dumb money has already left and wont be back
4. Tanklets dont understand dividends
5. Tanklets dont understand that stocks value are based on future earnings
6. Brandon told them much of this and they didn't listen and already lost money; now mad at all Brandons
7.No catalyst for rising stock price
8. 2nd qtr earnings not good
9. 3rd qtr and beyond losses as far as you can see
10. Excess ships will be scrapped setting stage for a weak recovery in 2027
11. When the board bagholders capitulate we will get a 30% bounce
11.5 this will happen in 5 to 6 weeks and this general will disappear that's your sign
12. Then down to zero on bankruptcy by June 2021

None of this is refutable

Reasonable concerns but I think you may be missing the point. Oil demand rising in the short term is a meme which will become apparent next week with oil futures. It will become further apparent when continental Euro countries shut down again (who are not prepared to allow deaths to the same extent as the US).

Plus, look at the Russian economy getting fucked by the virus as well - they can't afford to turn the taps off, even at current prices. It will take a while yet before there's equilibrium between demand/supply in oil.

even at $200k/day
VLCC holds what like 2m barrels of oil?
2m barrels of oil even at a depressed rate of $25/bbl is $50m worth of oil
if they hold it for a few months (or even the rest of the year) and oil rebounds to $40/bbl the value of the oil goes up by $30m and costs ~$1m/month to store

the lower the price of oil currently, the more sense it makes to just hold it in VLCCs for as long as it takes for prices to rebound

The only thing I find weird is that why people/instituitions/funds are dumping tanker stocks down to pre corona pre oil crisis times when
a) fundamentals for most tankers look amazing, great divvy, great cash flow, amazing nav, lowered debt.
b) they have even better fundamentals to come in Q2 and 3 due to fixed contracts made with insanely high rates
c) this oil glut isn't gonna magically resolve itself in a month's time, demand is still low cos of corona, gonna stay low till a vaccine is made or when we are sure there's no 2nd wave. Supply cuts don't matter unless you can drop supply below demand significantly. And after that, you still gotta finish using all these excess oil.
If you look at this whole situation as whole, it looks ridiculous, the bull case is much stronger than the bear case and yet. I keep trying to find out what I'm missing but nothing, the "long term" argument doesn't cut it because by that logic airlines/ cruise lines and resorts like disney would be back to normal levels, the oil price rally doesn't even correlate to the drop, on somedays they match, others they inverse.
The copypasta has wrong points and points that don't even correlate. What am I missing?

It seems like May 19th is the breaking point for tankers due to futures rollover.

Here's why I don't really know if this will make a difference:

1. We haven't been trading in correlation with WTI at all.

2. It feels like we've been pump and dump'd by some big guys, even if oil went negative again what's to say they're going to come back?

3. May 15th is more important in my opinion, as I believe there has to be insider trading with product tankers like $STNG. Their profit margins are just fucking crazy and we're still trading lower than in the beginning of 2020.

4. Everybody knows the positive future tankers hold for the upcoming quarters, but if they already knew that and sold, why would they buy back in?

I'm in the same boat as you guys but I've got to face the music at some point.

There may be some correlation with hin leong's collapse causing a dip but most of the tankers have good balance sheets, are transparent about earnings, paid of a bunch of debt, good cash flow, a farcry from bankruptcy, even bearish shipping analyst agree that these prices are too low.
But cherry picking ocean tankers isn't fair because hin leong as a whole lost money and hid it from it's investors. They lost money from oil futures not tankers. Even if ocean tankers generated $1billion this month in earnings, it still would have went down. I suggest you read your article again and perhaps cite more sources, don't let your hatred blind you from what makes sense. I too will continue looking for sources that might suggest a reason to sell/short tankers, but for now most articles are bullish

If you think about it without brandon, there would not be so much useful information given by so many different anons like oilanon, nor will we be so united in bagholding or dcaing tankers. So we kinda got him to thank despite his best efforts to anti shill

No joke, I'm legit happy for the WuFlu because we were reaching a level of overheated market that was going to blow the fuck up by June 2022 latest. Dividends are declared in advance, along with the ex-dividend date (if you own the stock before ex-div, you get paid, period). They can't just cut the dividend at random, they must announce it. EURN declared 1.1 per share (double payment, regular is 0.81 as I recall for the quarter but they're paying end of year dividends as well). DHT declared 0.35 per share. Those are guaranteed to happen. Additionally, they may pay 'surprise' dividend at any time based on earnings.

Tankers are going to fill before oil crashes completely. You should be buying tankers before said crash. How long before is not clear, depends how institutions are planning. Since they're buying in now, I'd say it's a good time to buy now. Just dca into it and write calls for now. When oil goes to nothing is probably actually a good time to SELL tankers and move into oil, or otherwise not long after that happens.

Personally, I see a guaranteed upside no matter what happens:
- Either phat divs for minimum 2 quarters, up to 4 quarters very certain
- Or huge appreciation near oil collapse
- Or back to 2019 levels after the crisis ends which is a big appreciation, plus the divs on top of that
I mean, they're reporting record-breaking earnings. Come the fuck on, how is it possible that they stay so low? I don't know how much lower it will go until then, but unless there's a second leg down, I'm extremely certain about this play. Hope it pans out.

>dividends
They pay you an amount per share you own at the opening of Ex-Dividend Date.
So naturally, some people immediately sell the stock at the opening on the session on ex-dividend date.
Genrally, the stock drops by the amount of dividend distributes so if the dividend was 1$ per share, the stock price falls 1$ per share.
But this isn't a rule. It's the market balancing itself.
So sometimes the stock doesn't drop at all, I've see cases of the stock even going up by the end of the day, for example Fastenall (FAST).
Some times the stock drops EVEN more than the dividend, for example Sanofi ADR (SNY)

So it's not worth it to buy the stock the day before ex-date and sell on the ex-date.
But for long holds, you can leave the stock alone and it will pay you the dividends.
Tanker stock given the industry, are supposed to do just that. They aren't continuous growth stocks.

And that is another argument for tanker stocks now. They came down too soon. They go up when that years dividends are good, and go down when they are bad. But this year dividend are great, and the stock isn't up.

It's called a shake out. It's done by institutions to shit on retail cucks. Very typical market dynamics. >Oil tankers are anticyclical!
>We're betting against oil!

Biggest miconception in this thread. If oil demand stays on significantly lower than pre-crisis levels for a long time, tankers are fucked. Yes, they earned some great money when supply and demand were in complete disarray leading to massive storage shortage. But soon enough (few months), the supply side will adapt and then oil tankers won't be needed for storage anymore and they will also earn less money from transportation because the demand is so low.

That possible outlook is priced in right now and the reason why tanker stocks are doing so mediocre right now. But yeah, keep believing that it's only because some hedge fund are desperate to shake out some redditor bagholders.

Y'all better hope for a V-shaped recovery of the world economy, including air travel. That really would be the best for tankers.

Trump and everyone in the oil industry are lying and obfuscating to prop it up. Look up the technical definitions of things like 'floating storage', or the fact that certain storage facilities will be 90%+ full and not taking in any more oil, but they refuse to call it full. If you can't/won't take any more oil, it's fucking full. They wanna play their little jew games, fine. They got those of us with May calls. The oil roll next month is going to fuck them right in the ass gangnam style.

>the supply side will adapt
game theory says otherwise. folding is the same as losing competitive edge in an environment that will be stuck with smaller margins for - potentially - years (without a hot war I'd guess this is the probable outcome). there is little motivation to cap wells as they are allegedly difficult to bring back to the same efficiency after being shut down.

I dispute that. An extended period of low demand works in favour of tankers, and you should be under no illusion that it will be an extended period (the oil pumps will never stop, and only the tip-top most insular americans not looking at the rest of the world thinks this is v- shape with demand springing back).

The current storage shortage means, as other anons have pointed out, that these companies are making their budgeted-for annual revenues in the space of months. They are exploiting the situation and making a killing.

Contrary to your argument, the supply side will not adapt. The pumps literally cannot stop without damaging the wells. The countries you are relying on (Russia, OPEC etc) don't trust each other to abide by shared reductions, just pay lipservice and continue pumping oil out for market share purposes.

Tankers are in the best position they've been in in over a decade. The supply side of tankers is set for zero growth, w/ an old fleet (avg. age around 10 years, VlCCs are scrapped at 20), and a small ordering book. With floating storage taking many ships out of the market w/ no replacements, spot rates will have trouble finding extreme lows again, especially if older ships are scrapped and not replaced. If demand for oil remains so low that tankers are no longer in use, we'll most likely have bigger problems on our hands. Through 2004ish-2008ish, shipping went through a super cycle. This put tankers in a very bad position for a decade as that super cycle ended. Now that they're finally free of that excess we should simply see them trade above their current prices simply because of that fact. There is no logical reason for tanker prices to be this low.
