ETF anon from last thread here.

So let's say I forget about the ETFs I just bought today. What's the best way to go about purchasing additional shares?

I know people do stuff like dollar-cost averaging but that usually doesn't happen for growth based things like ETFs that usually slowly and steadily go up right? So do people just buy after a quick dip then forget about it until their next investment opportunity (say, like a monthly paycheck or a yearly bonus comes in)?

And yes I understand that stocks won't always go up forever (ie. VTI taking nearly 2.5 years to recover from the 2008 crash) so even though ETFs aren't a 100% future proof method I still would like to keep investing into them whenever my savings allows for it. So yeah, what's a good way of deciding when to buy ETFs?

DCA is basically way to utilize a lump sum of money over a period of time. Studies consistently show that time in the market is > timing the market.

Some consider continually putting in new $ as DCA (i usually consider it that) but consistently buying ETFs is going to put you in a better position than waiting for dips to buy

I put money in the market twice a month, every pay check. don't think twice about it because I don't care about the immediate market reaction but if I'll get a decent RoR over the next decade

Divvy-Expert: I just received an unexpected $5k cash windfall from work, and want to start divvy investing for LONG term.

I'm leaning towards SPHD divvy blend, but what would you invest in. I see your chart, but I have read that investing in divvy stocks near their scheduled payouts is usually not the best plan because they drop right afterwards....

Any advice? I'm not a high roller, but I plan I sitting on this for at least 10 years.

How do you do your divvy DCA investing over long term with respect to this chart?

Most just dump a set amount into it each month cause timing the exact bottom is a fools game. It does the averaging on it's own. Yeah some months the the average may be higher but in others it'll be lower. You won't know nor care cause the only time you look at it is when you need to sell part or all of it when "retirement time" hits.

divvy blend isn't a bad idea, makes for easy diversification. i'm not opposed to it but I enjoy researching divvy stocks and buying individual companies, even if it may be to my detriment.

I dont' buy based on ex date or pay date because the stock doesn't always show a change in share price, despite the payment. I buy based on my sector spread (i'm way over in consumer staples, so i'm putting money into other sectors like healthcare, financial and industrial) and what looks like a good value.

Divvy on payout will drop by the corresponding amount paid in divvies, it's an excellent time to buy in then. Buying before ex-divvy date is another good date to get in because then you are entitled to the divvy. The stock price goes up after the divvy date's downward correction so no worries there for the most part. Of course this is additionally all subject to usual market movements.
I choose my investments based on book value (payout ratio, yield, frequency, free cash flow) and how likely I believe the company is to maintain or increase their dividend amount.
In the current climate, you can easily find 15%+ yields that are worth picking up. By the time they recover, you'll have doubled your money and will still be getting 15-20% of your investment back every year.

Looks like most people are on the same page. That's good to hear.

"Bogle and Malkiel both understood that stock picking is a waste of time. That’s why Bogle pioneered index fund investing in the 1970s and why Vanguard today manages trillions of retirement dollars for millions of Americans." I guess millions of Americans are also on the same page.

My question now is, let's say somebody needs to take some money out to do something like say, a down payment on a house or a side project without guaranteed income (imagine grad school, for example). How would the taxes on those ETFs work? Obviously I wouldn't want to sell them but if I absolutely had to, for entertainment or other important purposes.

>> No.19022552

Hi, I'm still all in. I've taken another big hit, but I'm standing firm.

My prediction was for the crash to happen today or tomorrow. We shall see if you can make fun of me (^:

I think the last move by the S&P500 today was truly abnormal. A quick summary of my observations

>Futures market went up on more retail-tier movements
>giant red candles out of nowhere tanked them
>no PPT green candle pumping the futures last night at all
>gap down this morning, followed by actual open hours market movement
>I assume this is FOMO by retail investors expecting "stocks only go up!!!!"
>giant sudden unrelenting red candle at close to take us from +0.50% to 0.00%

Volatility is still on the menu, boys. They aren't pumping it anymore.

>> No.19022555

>>19022394
I'm mostly in the sidelines for now, considering tanker into oil plays (both can give really good divvies, both are in my opinion guaranteed to go up, tankers first, and tankers' demise is the same as oil's rise, so this would cause multiplicative gains and solid divvies at the end). I also like REITs in normal times but not sure about them now.
I like ET, NU, OKE, XOM, CNQ, T, PPL and IP among others.

I've done a bit of research into TVIX and the VIX

It is important to know that the VIX, after a drop in the market, will often spike again but only up about 70-80% as high as before. Theoretically that gives me an exit price of $700-800. The only other time the VIX has been this high was the 2008 financial crises. That is also worth noting. During that time, the VIX did practically a double top almost equally as high (85 first spike, 80 second).

Assuming we are not in a "market correction" but in a genuine recession, as per the job report, we can expect another very large spike up in the VIX because there will be a second leg down, not just a downward couple weeks.

Oh I bought like 20 shares of XOM just for funsies.. Dividends sound cool, but they're tied to the price of the stock as well right?

So my question is, let's say I'm somebody who just buys say, index funds like FNILX or VOO. And let's pretend those guys return 5% a year for me.

And let's say dividend stocks with good yield (XOM for example) returns 7% annually. Those high yield dividend stocks also have the opportunity go up with the market, which means you would be getting that 7% plus the potential gains.

So my question is what are the risks that come with buying high yield dividend stocks? That sort of guaranteed income sounds very nice. I'm wondering if maybe I should make 10-15% of my portfolio individual blue chip stocks that give good dividends. Any thoughts?

No, only to the amount. Yield % is a current view of ROI, but unless the company is seeing financial trouble, the same or higher per-share dividend will be paid whether the share price doubles or halves. Hence, investing at 20% yield for $1000 would give you the same as investing at 10% for $2000 regardless of how many shares this buys you.

You should sell the RSUs and put them into the real stock or an index or whatever ASAP. RSUs are almost a scam. You are normally taxed at the time they vest anyway, the capital gains tax will just add up to it the same if you sell the RSU immediately to get the real stock or not. Better to sell immediately, therefore, since RSUs don't yield dividends or voting power.

>I don't know about gold miners how they work plus isn't gold just a boomer meme.
They just dig up dirt, put it through a refinery and metal comes out. They can sell it for up to $1700/oz, so the profit is in keeping the cost of mining low ($1000/oz or under is considered good for this current market). That's basically the business model.
>Foreign telecoms seem interesting like I did have MBT, but don't know what other telecom stocks are out there and if they are listed on nyse/nasdaq vs pink sheets. Plus do telecoms even grow?
Telecoms grow with population growth and general income growth and payout nice dividends, so just pick a country with a growing population that has an IQ in the 90s or more (a country which should continue to experience income growth) and buy telecom stocks and they will grow steadily with nice payouts.

Down 4% today on an all REIT portfolio, not a huge deal as I essentially plan to hold forever.
Basic strategy right now is to look at tenants, if a good chunk is malls, nursing homes, or similarly affected mortgage, steer clear. After finding a good grouping, diversify as much as possible. REITs in general are structurally protected against bankruptcy but it can only help to pick a wide spread.
During normal market conditions they are good dividend stocks with the caveat that price movement is typically very low, they don't reinvest much earnings in growth. That said, I am betting they will rebound in price eventually.

good stuff m8. I really hate to pull the "manipulation" card out but I genuinely think the gap ups on minimal volume were manipulation. There's no way I could have known that. I actually expected significant movement down after oil hit -300% and then again when Amazon missed earnings. However, the job report signifies that all manipulation is rendered null and void in practicality because the entire year is essentially promised to be downward and after that we saw pumps dissappear.

It's a collection of old books, it's difficult to find any copies of it online. I got it off 4chan, and reverse image search gave me JCA books which isn't really saying much. Sorry anon, I can't help you more than that.

I got a “Free ride violation” on Merrill. I was selling in a hurry, I bought and sold 19 shares of the same stock twice, basically selling the stock before the 2 day cash settlement went through. I freaked out when I saw the violation notification and called them up right away. I gave them the “I’m a new investor pls don’t ban me” line. They were actually really cool and said that because I called in right away and told them what’s up they wouldn’t flag my account. Dude actually talked for an hour to me to get me up to speed.
