Its a tough call, higher risk for sure. Picking single stocks can be hard until you understand the general investing strategy. Anyway, I'm in Canada but a lot of the same principles apply. In my ETF it has Suncor (huge oil company) and also Enbridge (pipeline, oil storage/transport, utility). Suncor slashed its dividend this week, but Enbridge announced they will be maintaining its dividend. Both stocks were green today and my ETF increased as well of course. An ETF is the easiest way to cover ground of several companies, but you can potentially make a lot more money with individual stocks. Since I'm not educated enough on oil/energy, I bought the ETF instead. I think if you go long on the biggest companies, you're probably relatively safe all though its possible another flash crash could happen again.
