Fellow TVIX chads, I've done some VIX analysis.

I'll save you the details and give you the facts

The 2008 financial crisis did almost a double peak but TVIX did not exist at that time but TVIX has done an
double peak with a previous high revisited even when the VIX did not, but not usually after a period of inactivity, making hitting $900-1000 very unlikely.

Coincentally, the initial drop started on a Thursday (5/20 2020). Just a side fact. Yesterday, Thursday (4/30 2020) was a similar down day and today (5/1 2020) was a large down day, similar to the subsequent Friday of 5/21 2020.

Maybe I was thinking of 401ks. I know that the 401k is tax-deferred, grows tax-free, and after a certain age withdrawals are mandatory so taxes will not be staved off forever. A Roth IRA looks like earnings are never ever taxed but only if I wait until I am ready for retirement. That locks away $6k of my annual income every year whereas with a taxable account I always have access to my money. I do make good money so perhaps I can split the difference and put some in one and some in another.

The momentum for the sell side has been building over the last three weeks. There have been at least two or three other downturns where the SPX was only propped up due to huge pressers or futures pumps (or both). Buy volume has been decreasing for two weeks, and every red day has seen increasing sell volume. I think the majority of the past few weeks have been the resistance. I don't disagree, but I think the next leg down is going to take a good deal longer than the first leg was. The first leg was caused by massive shutdowns, uncertainty, and lack of liquidity. The second leg down will be rebalancing of overbought stocks, markets sussing out the real damage of the shutdown and job losses and lack of consumer spending, and the Fed maaaaaaybe having lower QE.
But I will say, the trigger was definitely AMZN missing earnings. If they can't beat earnings, just imagine how many other companies are getting their asses beat right now, and will well into Q2. Another earnings to watch will be SHOP. If they miss, then its really bad for not just physical retail, but e-commerce retail as well.

I'm really bullish on gold and silver long-term purely because this ridiculous financial policy is gonna be the new normal. We might only see gold and silver beat inflation for awhile, but at some point people are gonna lose faith in our dollar if we need to prop up zombie companies and go brrrrr every decade. I don't really know if we have a run up in 2020 though.

Real estate is interesting, I've been thinking about it and can't really decide which way it goes. I think with the drought of sellers, prices could stay pretty high for awhile. I do hope they get lower so my bf and I can get a house sooner.

Indexing has some institutional problems as well. You're holding a basket of stocks that represent the US economy however in a recession there are either major restructurings with winners and losers or there are bailouts and infinite cheap credit leading to a situation like Japan with no long-term growth. Their portfolio is also by definition more heavily weighted towards overvalued stocks than undervalued ones. So major gains from stocks mooning doesn't actually help the portfolio much, they only gain if there's a general market rally.

We've had stupid easy credit since 2008. It's what has given us perpetual zombie corporations like Uber or any one of the 13% of corporations that in february couldn't pay interest payments on their debt.
A lot of that easy credit has flowed into, among other things, stock buybacks. This in turn has made the entire stock market valuation explode relative to GDP, which should be the underlying "collateral" of the market. TARP also eliminated the actual risk of dangerous or risky investment. Boeing did a lot of what they did/are doing because they knew they'd be supported no matter how many stupid or greedy decisions they made.
