It really depends on where you go. If you restrict yourself to Paris, then yeah, don't expect the postcard Paris. Historical center is still beautiful though. Now, on the other hand, countryside France is still old France, and is maximum comfy. It's really worth it to tour around a few old castles, going in old villages, visit natural parks and so on. I know the South and Alps a bit more, haven't had the chance to go to Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées yet, but will do so in the forseable future. Corsica is on my to do list next.
