Hey /biz/,

I've lurked this board for a few years now and have never really posted much. I 7x'd on LINK (sold half my stack today) and want to give back.

I am currently working in PE in NYC and know that some people on this board want real advice / tips (rather than LINK memes). I'll monitor and respond live for like 30 mins or so and then check back periodically tomorrow. AMA

I invest mostly in index funds. Sector-wise though, apart from AI / big data (obvious), I would recommend looking at public relations, single family real estate, and senior care.

PR - every corp large or small these days needs to have a good public appearance and this is easier to outsource than do in-house (well)

SFR - tons of tailwinds

Senior Care - this industry is already starting to take off, but it will really explode in the next 5/10/20 years. Anything senior care service-related is what I think is really interesting. Things outside the healthcare aspect of seniors.

It depends on what your definition of "good" is. If you are interested in it, then yes. If you're asking in the context of getting a banking job after school, I would say only do it if you can maintain a >3.4 GPA while doing it. Truth is a lot of people care about that stuff when interviewing and it will be an uphill climb if it's lower. That said, still possible though.

Your college major is so much more than your job after school though. Do what interests you and the jobs will follow.

But JPOW is bound to do some more insane things to bolster home prices, so who knows when it will really happen. August could be right. Maybe later though depending on if there is an outbreak 2.0 due to premature reopenings.

No idea about ETH. I hope LINK takes off.

ACRL is weird af but not in a bad way? Looks like it is essentially a long play on gold, which is always good. But they also offer advisory services to other microcap companies that want to go public? Seems like a strange combo. I would do some research on the management team. Last thing, there is no way SFRs are peaking. The inability for the majority of Americans to buy a home is going to drive stable tenants for decades. Also with a transient younger population, nobody wants to set down roots until later in life, like you since you probably went to school then 2-yr job then 2-yr job then a diff city for MBA, then another city.

Take all this with a grain of salt, but why not take the gap year after you graduate? If you get a return offer to a bank they may be ok with you doing that. Depends on the size of the bank (BB or MM) and the size of the group within it.

For the GPA, obviously that's not ideal, but it's all about how you spin it. To make sure you're given the chance to share your story, include your major GPA (finance 4.0 or whatever) and your overall GPA. Then people will know you can do the work and probably just fell asleep during pottery or philosophy or something and won't write you off for that. No matter what though, finish off strong and get your GPA as high as possible.

If by Corp Finance you mean Corp Dev (like M&A for larger companies / startups) I have a few friends that did it after banking. The salary is liveable and the hours are hard 9-5 depending on where you end up. It's really just a lifestyle choice

Horrible advice. Easy way to lose money.

Corona aside, the tenants would pay for the house. In order for any SFR investment to be viable you have to pick the market right (like inland southeastern real estate) and you'll be fine. Also, the houses on the market that are priced right are getting snapped up immediately by institutions.

That said though, it's a valid point about people not being able to pay rent. If that continues, the whole house of cards falls apart. What areas do you like if not SFRs?

Hands down being able to build LBOs from scratch in 90 mins. It will take some serious time on weekends depending on how much modeling you do in your group but it is 100% necessary and will help you on the other side too once you have the job.

Other than requisite skills, it varies firm to firm, but having the ability to hold conversations with people and form connections is huge. Being a number cruncher in banking will suffice but in PE you have to be a real FOH employee too

I learned from templates that the older analysts had. If you reach out to friends they will either have some or know people who do. As far as paid resources go, we had Training The Street do our banking training although that wasn't LBO focused per se. If you are serious about learning to LBO I would try and arrange a 1-1 tutoring session with someone. They will likely charge a high-ish hourly rate, but they will also likely be able to explain things in the most sensible real-terms kind of ways.

Regarding niche / underrated models, my simple answer would be not really. If you are trying to impress out of the gates, just have incredible attention to detail and make sure you are thinking rather than just doing. That is a cliche answer, but if you can really manage that (it's hard given the amount of work volume thrown at you) it makes a big difference.

A non-obvious answer (hopefully): Prioritization. In banking everything is "important" and it has to get done and that's why you work a million hours. On the other side I found that the work you do is a lot harder because it requires more thought, which means you can't do it 24/7 because you'll just burn out. So you need to communicate with your teams well and understand what is actually important for your deals.
