Read some of the books in OP to get an idea of what you should be looking for in companies. You can get a substantial amount of feedback from earnings reports and basically any statistic about a company. Yeah of course your research can be shitty and your thesis can be wrong, that's part of the risk is being wrong.

This really only applies to things like options. Almost every time I've lost on options it was not because I was wrong it was because my timing was wrong.
