Strongest entry level titles are Nocturne and SMT IV. If you intend to go through the entire series, I would suggest you begin with either of those and branch out, as they carry most of the themes found in each game, as well as being firmly accessible to newcomers.

If you are interested in SMT as a whole, I would recommend strongly that you play SMT 1 and 2, because they are the present basis of all settings surrounding the franchise, and even if they are starkly dated, they are fantastic experiences. Strange Journey is also a must, as even though it is theoretically a spinoff, it contains prominent "mainline" concepts and alignment. IV: Apocalypse easily has the best gameplay in the franchise, but the story and characters are embarrassingly bad compared to previous entries (that includes the vast majority of spinoffs).

In terms of spinoffs, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor, and Persona are all prominent, and you don't need to go too far out of your way to play any of them. I would highly, highly recommend you play at least one Mainline game (SMT I-IV, SJ, Nocturne) before you play any spinoff, because otherwise your perspective will be skewed. Some of the spinoffs are not worth the effort of pursuing (Card battle, Demikids, etc.), but if you find yourself consumed by a thirst to play EVERYTHING SMT, every single game has a translation at this point (including SMT If...) and (with the singular exception of IMAGINE), they can all be found with reasonably minor digging.

Lastly, most SMT fans tend to be relatively friendly, even if most of their banter looks like vitriolic shitflinging. If you have questions, don't feel afraid to ask.
