The huge amount of unemployment, even if temporary, will have a drastic drag effect on retail and the restaurant business. This also has knock on effects to the automotive industry because people will persevere with older cars rather than take on new debt. Nearly every metric and outlook is negative for the rest of the year, anyone who thinks stocks should be going up is an idiot. The mindset of the consumer has taken a drastic shock and people will be conservative with their money, the shock of the virus wont be about the death toll. Its the psychological effect that will cause consumers to question whether or not buying a new phone model is in their best interest when they nearly got kicked out of their apartment because they did not have a large enough rainy day fund.
