To understand why Creg lies to this extent is very simple, it follows the same logic as why Nigerian scammer write obviously fake letters and emails. It is to filter out people who would understand they got scammed and therefore start a loud campaign.
The most dangerous to scammers are people who nearly got scammed but managed to get away: these good folks will feel violated and do things to thwart your scam. This example is the Nigerian prince scam.
