the issue is the answer your looking for is complicated. There are hundreds of old hard rock mines in the southwest and all across California. I will tell you to try and locate the larger old mine sites, your looking for hardrock, not placer. Look for mines that had stamp mills, when you google them they are fairly obvious. The place to look for gold in these mills would be at the bases of the concrete or stone foundation for the stamp battery, this is where the gold dust will settle.

Now as to where to look, I would suggest you do your own research, look up places like Empire, Nevada City, Bodie and others. Find which area was closest to you and work from there. There is literally miles of documentation on California's gold mines.

Found a site called thedigs or something that has some intel, but the mine I am thinking of was a hard rock mine if i recall correctly. best of luck to you! you never know what you might find either just around these old mines, years ago I was exploring a site near the lost city of Phoenix in BC's Boundary district. The claim had several trenches in rock with quartz stringers running through them. I got borred of these trenches as there wasnt anything in them, followed one of these stringers into a big of a gully, and there, under an upturned stump was some of the best ore i had ever seen. Blue quartz ore shot through with visible gold and arsenopyrite. Got a bonus from the claim owner for that find. Had excellent drill results.
