18287739 No.18287739 [Reply] [Original]

I recently purchased $2500 of gold and silver to hedge my bets against whatever god forsake future we are heading into. I wanted to know if it is worth getting a safe for and which would you recommend?
My current safe is a shoebox.

a fireproof one, bolted to a wall and hidden away

I don’t think I would cuz that’s an easy target. You can easily hide gold somewhere where nobody would ever look. I’m thinking of burying my 100 ouncer of silver away from my other silver

Safes are a meme. No safe is really safe. The safes are there to delay the robber, not to stop him from taking your stuff.

The safest way is to store your stack somewhere no one would bother to look. Like in the trash bin.

Or a shoebox?

>> No.18288082

My biggest concern wouldn’t be people robbing the gold, it would be trying to protect it from a fire. You don’t want your gold melting. Get a fireproof safe that’s too heavy for someone to easily carry away

Sure. If you have 20 shoeboxes and one contains your stack, no will will bother to go through all of them.

Yeah, I think safes are great. It depends if you want to have a safe that you can conceal or not. If you only have gold/silver - a small one will be fine. At least you can more it around for the most part which gives you flexibility. I have a very large safe, but that only because I have 20+ firearms on top of my metals and other shit. But if you only have $2500, it seems you only bought this as a hedge and don't carry gold/silver year round, or 'stack' it as some people say. If you plan on only having your metals for a limited time, just don't tell anyone and put it in a box and hide it. If you will continue to stack metals, buy a safe.

/k/ here. I keep a about 30k in guns in one, so here is the basic advice.

>A safe only buys you time
Anyone will break in given enough time. You should also have a security system with UPS and cellular backup. You need to know when someone is in your home

>A safe should be fireproof
Won't stop everything but again it buys time for the FD to get there

>A safe must be bolted to the floor
If you don't do this you're a fucking idiot and you deserve to have your safe carted away.
>but I live in an apartment
You're poor. Focus on buying a house then you can keep stuff worth keeping in a safe.

Good advice ITT. I have a cheap 'fireproof' Sentry safe that looks solid, but I watched someone on youtube use a rotary saw with a wood blade cut it in half in under a minute. Looks like approx. 20gauge steel with fire retardant foam layered between a plastic liner where you put your stuff.
Mainly it gives me one central place to keep my valuables together, and will keep honest people honest.
My lawyer had his gold stolen out of his closet by the construction workers next door. Think he had it in a box in his closet, FWIW.
I just moved, and I keep my pistols in a locked plastic portable toolbox for discretion. When they were done, I couldn't find it and freaked out. They'd left it holding the front gate open to the street, had no idea what was in it.
So what I'm saying is do your best and hope you get lucky if someone breaks in. A real safe with solid steel will cost thousands of dollars. Maybe try and buy a used one off craigslist, but good luck moving that thing.

Buy a gun safe with a high fire rating.
If you live in the US look up "Old Glory Safes", they are made here if that's important to you but they also have a very high fire rating.

Not that anon but lots of possible options
>store some in your ceiling. Works better w gold as you can store more value w less space/weight
>seal your metal then put it in a can of paint
>in your hamper under clothes or in pockets of clothes you dont plan to wear/wash
>in your vacuum cleaner. Open the bag if possible and put it there in a container
>in the glovebox/trunk of your car. Prob not the best or safest idea but at least no one can find this if they break into your house. Doubtful anyone breaks into your car trunk and finds it. For example in your golf bag or something.
>bury it in your garden or yard if you have one
>buy a plant or pot and fill it with soil/plants. Bury metal there
>have a small % out in the open so if someone does break in they might just grab that and run
>store a % with trusted family or close friend. Maybe have friend store some w you to spread risks ie if he is robbed some of his stuff is safe w you and vice versa
>store a % overseas in a vault
>store a % in a bank vault locally
>store a % in local storage place
>as others said, storing in food. For example buy ice cream, eat the ice cream, fill container w gold. Possibly leave some ice cream on top, or not. Seems low risk either way
>under your trash bag inside the trash can
>inside of shampoo or other similar container
Theres so many ways. Find what's best

Safes are for decoys. Load it with heavy worthless things and hide it somewhere. Meanwhile take your valuables and hide them inside soda cans, in plant dirt, open uo electronics and hide them there, insife doors, inside the walls of electrical sockets, and spread them out all over the house.

>And what happens with someone takes out the trash?

Underneath the bag, you idiot. Also, inside the powder detergent. Inside the cereal box. Under the mattress. Inside the mattress. In the back of the closet.

If society is collapsing, expect the police to not be bothering with residential burglary alarms. They already don't give a fuck about them in big cities and are given the lowest priority in the calls for service. Make sure you monitor your own shit if need be and that you can get home quickly if needed. I have a gun safe, and I have a Burglar Bomb in my closet that's integrated with my alarm system. This motherfucker will fill my closet with a thick smog of OC spray if someone enters my closet wothout disarming the system. So any potential burglar will have to deal with the loud ass siren alerting my neighbors, and if they manage to get in the closet then it will immediately start filling with OC spray.

My gun collection is worth about $30k, and my night vision goggles are worth about another $5k. I keep it all in my safe, with a small coin collection of various silver, gold and old coins I value at about another $5k. I paid about $2k for the safe, an old, thick Browning.
