Hello /biz/. I'm a senior graduating in the fall from Baruch College in NYC. I have a 3.6 GPA and majoring in accounting. I'm gonna try to shoot for one of the bigger firms [possibly big 4]. I have heard from a couple people who have graduated that they are having a hard time getting a job as a CPA. I want to know is it very hard these days to land a job, and what are the usual starting salaries for Accountants in NYC?

Also to the first part of your question, why are you not looking for internships? It's one thing to get a degree and be able to pass tests, but it's definitely another for a business to know that you are able to apply it in the real world. Internships get you the real world experience to not only learn, but prove yourself, and are low risk for business. Are you doing anything like that? If not, you should be.

Haven't had time, my college has an incredibly high fail rate for accounting majors, almost half switch majors. Had to put the nose to the books so I could get a decent GPA :). I'm sorting this shit out now since I only have 3 classes left and my time is freed up.

Also ik plenty of people who focused on career path first, even getting jobs at Deloitte and Ey paying little mind to studies, not hitting the required GPA and switching majors. So all that time at the big 4 wasted. Not so dumb to prioritize the hard part first yeah?

Good. So work your fucking ass off, learn as much as you can, ask people questions, seem interested. All of these are career building and will work in your favor when you go for a real job. Be the best at what you do and get yourself into positions where you're challenged and succeed. Should have no problem getting a job if you're top notch, unless that is just a saturated market to begin with.

All you have to do is prove that you're not a run-of-the-mill graduate and you'll be fine. Take on extra work and make your intern manager sing your praises. It's really that simple. So just be a go getter and apply myself 100 %. Shouldn't be to hard. I think he was probably just not trying hard enough. Kid had a decent GPA but didn't even go into the schools MS program which basically gets you a job at one of the bigger firms if you go to the events.

Nah I think there is an attitude now that you go to school and can just get a good job. I didn't go to college, personally. Worked my ass off. My comp(cash and equity) will be about $120k(not same field, and I live in CT) this year working for a company that's included in the DJI. Education is becoming less important and businesses are starting to focus more on substance and delivery. You can apply yourself 100% at some point but if you want to guarantee your work as an intern, do a little more than that. Lose sleep over it. Make your employer feel stupid for even thinking about letting you go. That's the goal. It's all about value.

Yeah thats essentially what I have been doing to keep my grades high (have had many a night without sleep studying to ensure the A) so I think if I take that with me I should be alright. Then theres people who say its who you know not what you know so sometimes I question who is really right.
