I did roofing for like 5 years, which is widely considered one of the most physically demanding and dangerous jobs you can do, and tons of people I worked with were just these little 5ft-nothing, 100lb spanish dudes. Everything now-a-days has to be engineered to either be manageable by 1 average person, or is meant to be installed by multiple people working together. You don't have to be strong to do manual labour, its more mental fortitude than physical strength (it fucking sucks and your brain is going to be constantly telling you that it sucks and to give up).

I dunno any other with a lower barrier to entry than flatroofing that I can make $30/hr in after 3 or 4 years, that starts at like $20. It was $17/hr when I started, but new guys are getting $20/hr now where I work. fwiw I dont do roofing anymore but am still at the same company (basically a hands-on customer service/inspection/estimating/etc role, a lot of my jobs is going to major companies which are customers of ours and determining whether a cheap fix is more worth it than a full re-roof)

You have to actually apply for new jobs to get paid, but you dont have to worry about putting food on the table and paying rent. What does this mean? Well it means that you are less likely to choose a job out of desperation or stay in a job that you secretly hate just because you need to have something to eat /pay the rent and you dont have to suck up to your boss if hes treat you like shit. Knowing that youre not forced to do things you dont want to and stay in job that slowly kills your soul actually make people BETTER workers and they will more likely choose a job that fits them. All this means that you have MORE personal freedom not less.
