>fatalities at 4%
>"that's just bad Chinese medical care"
>fatalities at 8%
>"mild cases are being missed. Now that testing is exploding, it will go way down in two weeks. No way is it over 1%.
>Two weeks pass, massive testing
>Fatalities exceed 15%
>R0 seems to be on the high end of original predictions.

The leaked early March CDC projection had a maximum 1% fatality rate and predicted 2.4 million dead in America in a year.

Since then Harvard put out a revised lethality rate of 5.4%, WHO is moving up to 3.4%. In Italian style collapse it seems it might be closer to 8%.

If it turns out this bug is actually more like 1:10 fatal and it keeps getting confirmed, how bad will the markets react?

>What's the point of testing so many people? I bet there were many infections due to the actual process of being tested. If you feel bad, just go to the hospital and get tested then.
The whole point of us crashing the economy & staying indoors and of course getting tested is to curb the exponential growth of this meme virus that would in reality ruin the economy even worse.

The virus gets passed on to other people, even if you're healthy you can be carrying it and passing it on. If person X is found to be sick then everyone in person X's life should be tested as well. That one attorney in NYC spread it to 50 people, there were cases in Korea of single patients infecting thousands of people via proxy.

So when you're tested and positive for the virus even if you're relatively healthy, you stay indoors and don't pass it on.

It's basic hygiene/medicine.

South Korea was also an early adopter of testing, and so it was kept very low to begin with, not close to its peak at all.

Best bets to really measure the extent of this would be mass testing in Spain and Italy. Two weeks from now US, Brazil, and India would also be good candidates for a study because it will be so widespread you could even get away with random trials instead of literally going up to everyone.

Regardless of what happens a great contrast between East and West has been highlighted. South Korea and China (Japan to a much lesser extent because they're bugmen) have a much higher sense of every person being part of a collective. Using South Korea as an example, even the piss poor know they have a part to play in a larger scheme and more or less follow instructions regarding hard quarantine. Even in my case, the government also had the same sense of collectivity and "how will the people earn money" was not even a question here in Singapore (and as you may know we are pretty damn capitalist).

People in the West would say this is complacency and a slave mentality. Perhaps it is, but I don't care about the moral judgement, only in exposing the stark difference in reactions to the disease. Americans especially are far more individualist and in my opinion, it leads to a kind of detachment from group efforts. It's very hard to see community effort in the US nowadays and this causes a large portion of the population to think that the problems of society also do not apply to their personal sphere. Quarantines are hard to pull off to Americans because they believe to somehow exist outside of a larger, complex system where issues can cascade into them in an absolutely random fashion.

Fatality rates assume full 1st world medical care.

>Another recent study, considered the largest on COVID-19 cases to date, researchers from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Protection, analyzed 44,672 confirmed cases in China between Dec. 31, 2019 and Feb. 11, 2020. Of those cases, 80.9% (or 36,160 cases) were considered mild, 13.8% (6,168 cases) severe and 4.7% (2,087) critical. "Critical cases were those that exhibited respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction/failure," the researchers wrote in the paper published in China CDC Weekly.

If 4.7% get sepsis or respitory faliure, then mortality can trend up near that mark as hospitals collapse. If you get sepsis on a field bed in some stadium you are going to die. If you get respitory faliure in a gymnasium that is out of ventilators, you will die.

At a certain rate of collapse a 13% hospitalization rate means you can get 5% mortality from a disease that would otherwise be around 1% or less

America's underlying health and actions follow Italy a lot more than South Korea. Once we incubate 100 million cases everyone else is fucked too.

Well this is a dumb thread.

For every person that's been tested there are numerous others with it who have mild or no symptoms at all. These people obviously aren't going to be tested.

The number of people with the virus is almost certainly multiple times higher than the official tested figures. That's why it's spreading so quickly, as it's impossible to stop the spread caused by asymptomatic carriers.

Off for two reasons.

1. You're assuming 100% of those populations get it, but CDC was estimating closer to 40-70% before a vaccine gets into wide use. That is a huge range and denotes how little is known about the actual R0 and how much it can be reduced. China suggests a true shut down can reduce it enough for contact tracing to work, but China shut down way ahead of where the US and Europe already are.

2. Lethality in Wubei was over 5% due to the collapse of the healthcare system. Outside it was around 1%.

It really depends on how much it fucks with the system. CDC models basically ignored this, probably because the result would cause panic.

If you're talking slow, but eventual shutdown, maybe as low as 250k. If you're talking only moderate and uneven shutdowns, with reopenings in between, it could hit those low million figures.

If you're one of the super retards who suggests doing absolutely nothing and 40% of people get it in 6 months you could have full chaos and it would spiral out of control.

I'ma peg it at a big crisis in the US leading to full shut down, only 500k dead, tardos use that as evidence that we shouldn't have done anything.

case fatality rate or deaths per confirmed cases.

the cfr of the seasonal flu i 0.1% and the flu kills average 500k people per year which means there are 500,000,000 cases of seasonal flu per year.
If we assume covid 19 will produce as many confirmed cases as the flu and the cfr does not change you will see 22 million dead globally.

given that this is worse than the flu it's reasonable to expect the confirmed cases to be higher (covid 19 cases will hit 500m by june at current rate) and as hospitals become more overloaded it is reasonable to expect the cfr to continue to grow.

Say confirmed cases reached 30% of the global population (2.34B) and the cfr grew to 8% you would have 187million dead. Would reach that case rate by june at current rate

When you see the growth factor (new cases today/new cases yesterday) become less than 1 consistently we are halfway to our total confirmed cases

I think Communist China did the lockdowns "properly" after they sent in the military, which was after that large and sudden increase in cases after they changed the definitions of who has Covid-19, allowing for CT scans and clinical diagnoses to confirm cases, instead of just using the testkits which were in short supply and unreliable. Anyone else find it odd that now Communist China has a lot of testkits that they are sending to Europe and other countries. How many people were about to die anyway and Corona just accelerated it a few days? Many people who have been infected have zero symptoms so it is impossible to confirm an accurate death rate, only that it is necessarily lower than what the numbers say. Countries which test more have a lower death rate, implying that the disease is more widespread and less deadly than expected.

>The modeling by researchers at Oxford’s Evolutionary Ecology of Infectious Disease group indicates the COVID-19 virus reached the UK by mid-January at the latest, spreading undetected for more than a month before the first official case was reported in late February, the Financial Times reports.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2020/03/24/coronavirus-may-have-already-infected-half-of-uk-study-says/amp/

>A family from East Sussex may have been Britain’s first coronavirus victims, catching the virus in mid-January after visiting an Austrian ski resort which is now under investigation for allegedly covering up the early outbreak.

>If confirmed with official tests, it would mean the outbreak in Britain started more than a month earlier than currently thought.

yes and its possible that it is quite far off, as demonstrated by the two articles, one about researchers in Oxford, which ought to provide some credibility to the argument, and the other confirming one of the suspicions of the Oxford team

Again, going by official cases is silly because most people who had it went undiagnosed. This brings the actual death rate down significantly
>If we rely on the estimate of 50 million deaths published by Johnson and Mueller, it implies that the Spanish flu killed 2.7% of the world population. And if it was in fact higher – 100 million as these authors suggest – then the global death rate would have been 5.4%.10

Too many tards to reply to, but for a business and finance board, y'all don't seem to understand how percentages or projections work. Imagine being so stupid you think that kill counts are at all relevant beyond determining mortality rates. Imagine being so stupid that you don't understand that at any given time, deriving a mortality rate by cases/deaths will give you a number lower than the true rate, as patients have yet to die. Imagine being so stupid that you don't understand that the most susceptible die first, and therefore in the early stages most of the dead had preexisting illnesses. Imagine being so stupid that you think there are partisan positions on the threat of the virus. Imagine doing all of this, then trying to manage a portfolio.

There were only 2.5 million people, total, who died in the US last year. Hundreds of thousands in a two month span, especially if it gets to 10s of thousands in NYC alone (and it probably will), is still a bunch of dead bodies piling up faster than they can be buried or cremated without mass graves and cremations.

I don't know, cause they weren't tested for corona. they are only testing extreme sickness and if you've been in contact with other corona patients in the US, or at least in my state.

If my numbers are speculation then all the data and statistics around the virus are equally speculative because we know very little about the virus. So your point is completely asinine.
