Is there a name for this strategy?

The incubation period starts the second it's in your body. You obviously won't test positive at that second. I forget how long it takes for incubation period tests to be considered reliable but I think it was 2 days after exposure with the marginal risk mostly draining away towards the symptomatic period.

But you can even test negative in the symptomatic period. These tests aren't foolproof and separate from that a lot of the early ones had a high false negative rate to boot that hasn't been completely solved just due to biochemistry being hard.

Actually the earliest ones could also cause false positives when exposed to water and had to be recalled.
