Our generation and younger have been presented with a lot of media suggesting that if you can't have or be perfect you may as well just give up, and it's only worse with social media. It's not so much their parents, though they'd be the easiest thing to blame.

Their parents didn't blast them with propaganda saying "you can be anything" from the day they entered pre-school, without anything suggesting "mediocrity and living within your means is okay!"
