I disagree, I see them as an eventuality due to the absurd amounts of money brokerage houses have taken in fees and commissions throughout the markets history. Commission fees are what kept me away from actively trading my whole life, and the moment I heard of a broker without any I was in. Margin account is the key term, probably. There is something called the "three day rule" that would prevent you from selling a stock, buying another, and then selling it again in a 3 day period of time, but since a margin account is like a line of revolving credit, it might/probably wouldn't matter if you still have a lot of margin left. However, the 3 day rule can slow you down if you're in a cash account.

The problem is this... if your broker isn't charging you for transactions, they're making money on you elsewhere. They might be front-loading you, they might be doing shadow transactions, but they're going to be making money from you somewhere. I'd rather pay a fee to keep them honest than take it in the back later when I find them double dealing.

I'm especially concerned about the fact that they seem to cater to slow share transactions. For example, if you buy 2 shares of XYZ, it's not like some broker on the floor is trading 2 shares. Floor traders trade in blocks of 100 shares. So what happens when you are the only person buying XYZ at any given moment?

In that case, a good guess would be that your broker is trading their own book; doing a paper transaction on your side, and then waiting to accumulate 100 shares of purchases before they make the actual purchase.

While this risk is limited by the fact that they WOULD complete the transaction on their end as soon as enough transactions come in to create 100-share blocks that they CAN trade, It would be dangerous in high-volatility times like now.
