I just started paying very close attention to the market implications of the virus because I've got a loved one who is in a country that is very close to it, so I heard about the virus before the news was even really talking that much about it, then as it spread I knew it was going to be a big deal. I sold my stuff just over a week ago because I knew that once it hit Europe, it was guaranteed to come to the US as well, and that the markets would finally take a dive. So it was one of the very, very few times I've been lucky and alert enough to time the markets. My account lists 120k now, from about 60k. I sold NVDA, AMD, TSLA, and SPCE and dumped the cash into VIXY calls and SPY puts.

Posted this in the last thread and then realized the bump limit was about to be hit.

Newish to stocks and quick question: how can you pull off shorting? If you're convinced something is going down so you're going to sell it, how can you be sure (or at least have the odds on your side) someone else will actually buy your shares and get you off the hook before you lose your money?

For example, I'm tempted to buy a bunch of SQQQ. Assuming it actually does go up, when I think it's run its course and the market is going to stabilize I'd try to sell, but wouldn't other people also see the same signs and therefore not want to buy my shares leaving me with stocks which will ultimately drop me right back to where I started or even worse?

Regulated markets have people/organizations called "market makers". Their job is to always be willing to buy or sell. They create price stability by preventing thinly traded stocks from having radical swings.

That being said, NEVER short a stock directly. With shorting you have UNLIMITED RISK, and there are piles of stories about people who went to bed up 10k and woke up the next morning owing someone 200k (which yes, you have to pay).

If you think the price of a stock is going to go down, buy a put option. With put options the most you can lose is everything you've invested.

the unlimited stems from the fact that you are betting a stock will go down. if it goes up (and there is no limit to how much the stock goes up +$10, +$100, +$500, etc.) you are held accountable to fulfill the order. so yes, when you short and it goes wrong, you lose what you put in and then owe on top of it.

OK, this requires a long answer, so here we go...

Let's say you think that company ABC is going to go down, and that it's currently at $100 per share.

If you short it, you get $100 per share for every share you sell. If it drops to $60 and you want to close out your position, you buy them back for $60 per share, and you pocket the $40 per share as profit.

But here's the thing... when you short a stock (selling stock you don't already own), you MUST give those shares back, and you must buy them back no matter the price.

So let's say that ABC is $100 per share when you short, then, the next morning before the stock opens, you discover that ABC just found the cure for cancer. ABC is suddenly going to open at $1000 per share, and it's going to "gap", which means it doesn't pass through all of the numbers in between, it goes straight from $100 to $1000. Now, in order to buy back the shares, you have to spend $900 per share more than you made selling them in the first place. And you MUST do it.

So shorting has unlimited risk because there is no upper limit, and it's easy to lose much more than your initial investment/return from the sale that opened the position.

Now a put is different, a put is the right, but NOT the obligation to sell shares at a certain price. So if ABC is at $100, and you spend, let's say, $2/share to buy a $60 put (the right to sell at 60), if it drops down to $50, you make your $8 per share profit.

But if it DOESN'T drop, you simply lose the $2 per share you paid for the right to sell the shares had they gone down as you planned. So the most you can lose is everything you've invested.

WASHINGTON — The White House moved on Thursday to tighten control of coronavirus messaging by government health officials and scientists, directing them to coordinate all statements and public appearances with the office of Vice President Mike Pence, according to several officials familiar with the new approach.

antarctica still seems safe, they haven't found it on the moon. what about this artemis project NASA has been spending billions and billions on.... I just learned last night they're going to send a fucking rocket to mars, and drill some samples, fly a helicopter around the mother fucker to blow the damn dust off the solar panels, this rover is supposed to leave a trey of samples from the drill holes.

Second mission we have a collector to grab the samples the other rover dropped, we put the samples into a rocket and fire a fucking missle off the martian surface.

3rd mission we have an orbiter in place to catch the fucking rocket.... and then refire back to earth.....

we're only landing shit on mars at a 50% chance.... the thin atmosphere makes it very shallow so to speak... they want this done by 2034, and the launch is like next year or something for the first mission.... fuck it'll be cool if they pull this one off. I want my tax dollars to at least do something cool like this.

most people are average which means they will work average jobs and make an average amount of money, and in this entitled, pampered, spoiled-ass age, average is equivalent with destitution
reminder that even the poorest person in the us is probably wealthier than his entire ancestry based solely on the fact that he has access to institutions that are designed to help him not be poor. poor choices, stupidity, and irrationality have more to do with ones "poor wages" than any economic system that ever has been in place or ever will be in place
